TAKE FIVE
Why lovelorn Shaina prefers ‘mature’ men to boys

Young actress Shaina Magdayao, who recently broke up with her boyfriend, actor John Pratts, has a practical explanation for why she prefers ?mature? men to boys.

?At a very young age, I was already given many responsibilities. I don?t have time to share a boy?s fascination with teenage stuff. I?d like to be able to talk to the person I?m with about life, not just about mundane and immature things,? Shaina told Inquirer Entertainment.

In January, Shaina confirmed her breakup with John, but declined to divulge the reason. The actress, however, maintained there was no ?third party? involved, despite rumors that John was dating another actress, Denise Laurel.

Reports quoting Shaina said the breakup was difficult for both her and John. ?But we?re trying very hard to save the friendship,? Shaina pointed out. ?We both take the blame for the failed relationship.?

She declined to answer more questions about the split, although she did let Inquirer Entertainment in on the kind of guy she?d like to be with in the future. We asked Shaina?who, many people say, bears a striking resemblance to ?New Moon? lead actress Kristen Stewart?why she prefers the character Edward Cullen (portrayed by Robert Pattinson) to Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

?I like men who are mature. Guys like Jacob are still young and adventurous. They always want to explore,? Shaina explained. ?I want to be able to look up to the person I?m with. With Edward [types], I feel I can discuss so many things. I find Edward very interesting. He has so many experiences in life that he can share with a girl. I want to be with a partner who is like him.?

Edward is a vampire who, in the course of the ?Twilight? series, falls in love with, marries, and has a child with Bella Swan (Stewart). Edward is estimated to be at least 100 years old. Jacob, 16, who undergoes a transformation that makes him morph into a wolf, competes with Edward for Bella?s love. Various websites feature debates among ?Twilight? fans on who between the two is best suited to be Bella?s life partner.

How do you react when people say you?re a Bella look-alike?

I feel flattered. I appreciate the fact that they see in me the Bella, whom a lot of girls admire. People say I look very much like Kristen, but more in the film ?New Moon? than in ?Twilight.? I?m an avid fan of the Stephanie Meyer books, not so much of the movie adaptations. They always say that when we read the book and watch the movie, we get disappointed. What we imagine is always different from the imagination of the director and the scriptwriter.

Can you share something about Maribel, your character in the upcoming drama ?Rubi??

She?s physically weak. She?s a cripple. She?s very insecure until she meets her best friend Rubi, who is supposed to fight for her and protect her. But being the bida-kontrabida character that Rubi is, she also maltreats Maribel. It?s for the viewers to see if Maribel, the weakling, somebody who is innocent and pure, will have the courage to fight back.

This show (which starts airing in March), is something new. We got used to programs that focuses on the good girl. ?Rubi? revolves around the scheming and ambitious character played by Angelica Panganiban.

Are you open to doing other out-of-the-box characters like Vira, your character in the defunct show ?Kambal sa Uma??

If you always stick to one kind of role, you won?t grow as an actor. That has always been my struggle?I?m always looking for something new to offer viewers. I?ve been in the business for a long time. I started when I was 6; I?m 20 now. If I keep doing the same things, accepting the same role over and over again, di ako magtatagal. Nobody will want to hire me anymore.

Like your sister Vina Morales, you?ve also ventured into your own businesses.

I own 18 apartment units. Thank God they?re always full. I also co-own a laundry and altering shop on Timog Avenue in Quezon City. I was just in Cebu for the opening of Ystillo salon. We have 30 branches, half of them are company-owned and the rest are franchises. I co-own the branches in SM Fairview and SM Manila, while the Cebu branch is really mine.

How is Vina (shortly after announcing she has broken up with businessman Cedric Lee, father of her daughter Ceana)?

I see that she?s very happy and complete with Ceana in her life. I guess that?s what was missing before. Since her little angel arrived, her priorities have changed. Nowadays, she doesn?t just think of herself or her love life, mayroon na siyang inaalagaan. Looking at her and Ceana together makes me and the rest of the family happy, too. She has a newfound drive to be responsible and to be a good example to her daughter. She?s really a hands-on mom. She doesn?t rely on Ceana?s yaya.

What are you like as an aunt to Ceana?

I don?t live with my Ate Vina. I stay with my dad, my other sister and two pamangkin. I have seven nephews and nieces. Just like my other pamangkin, I spoil Ceana very much.
