MANILA, Philippines--THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD has been an unusually ?happening? scene this month, suggesting that 2010 will turn out to be an unusually busy and eventful year.
On TV, the stronger presence of TV5 this year has energized the television scene and pressured ABS-CBN and GMA 7 to offer more treats than usual, all in the name of hyped-up competition.
Only time will tell if the inroads TV5 hopes to make will unnerve and eventually dislodge the traditional front-runners, but the ?third? channel?s bid is definitely the strongest it?s ever threatened to make.
Small wonder, then, that both ABS-CBN and GMA 7 are premiering new teleseryes and other shows with unusually heavy star value.
Of particular interest is the new soap ?Kung Tayo?y Magkakalayo? and Judy Ann Santos? first teleserye in years.
Aside from other big stars, ?Kung Tayo?y Magkakalayo? top-bills the popular love team of Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu. It looks like some powers that be think they?re the tandem to bet on, despite that fact that, to date, Kim has generally revealed more of her limitations than her acting assets.
In fact, some decision-makers appear to be so gung-ho about them that Star Cinema has come out with a new film, ?Paano Na Kaya??
It?s quite unusual for stars to have a TV series and a new film opening pretty much at the same time, so the ?Kimmerald? love team?s cup runneth over. The big question is, after the two production?s opening dates, will the hot, new TV-film love team live up to its producers? high expectations? Abangan.
Judy Ann is similarly flying high, because she not only has a new soap, but also an ongoing hit sitcom, and is currently shooting a feature film co-starring her and Sarah Geronimo. Talk about a triple threat in the biz, Juday is it.
For her part, Sarah is a formidable multimedia star in her own right, but appears to be limited by an excessively heavy workload and relative lack of freedom and space in her personal life. No longer a teenager, she has still to admit to having had a boyfriend, so the love scenes she essays in her hit rom-coms are merely theoretically prescient?at best.
Clearly, Sarah needs to develop herself, not just as a talent, but also as a maturing person, if she wants her portrayals to be believable and truly felt.
One wonders, in fact, how she?ll fare in her challenging dramatic movie with Judy Ann, who?s had more than enough performing and life experiences to act circles around her. We hope it doesn?t happen, but it is cause for concern.
In a sense, Sarah and Kim Chiu appear to be facing the same acting predicament: They?re both being rushed into young-adult stardom?without the talent and character development needed to make the difficult transition work.
