ONCE UPON A TIME, a great king asked the wise sage, Narada Muni, ?Great sage, kindly explain how we may attain liberation.? The inquisitive king was given the following instructions:
1. Earn a decent livelihood. But, instead of enjoying the results of your labor, offer them to the Supreme Being.
2. You may claim proprietorship to as many resources needed to maintain your well-being, but a person who hankers for more than what?s necessary is seen as a thief, and he will be punished by the laws of nature.
3. The natural products provided by the Supreme Being should be used for the well-being of living entities. A man lives in human society undisturbed, detached and unagitated by family or societal affairs, although he appears involved externally.
4. A wise man makes his life simple and uncomplicated. He?s determined not to live a cumbersome existence, in which a higher purpose isn?t fulfilled.
5. You should treat innocent animals like your own children. There?s little difference between children and those innocent creatures.
6. One shouldn?t endeavor very hard for great wealth or satisfaction of the senses. A person should be satisfied to maintain one?s well-being with minimal endeavor, and with the grace of the Lord.
7. Every day, you should worship the Supreme Being, who lives in everyone?s heart.
8. Associate with saintly persons. Gradually, you?ll become spiritually enlivened, like a man waking from a dream.
These instructions will help everyone achieve true peace and progress.
