Abba joins eclectic Rock Hall of Fame batch

NEW YORK?Veteran Swedish pop group Abba was to share the limelight Monday in New York with punk band the Stooges and reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, Genesis and The Hollies in joining the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The eclectic group were the latest inductees to win the prestigious US honor, after being voted in by more than 500 rock experts.

The inclusion of Abba raised eyebrows of fans who question whether the light pop group, despite its mammoth and enduring popularity, qualifies as a rock force.

But Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation CEO Joel Peresman said the collection "represent a great cross-section of artists."

They "have contributed immeasurably to our business," he said.

The ceremony was to take place at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel, although the hall of fame itself is in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Hollies were to perform at the ceremony, but not Abba or Genesis, whose lead singer Peter Gabriel is rehearsing for a solo tour.

The Stooges' Iggy Pop was attending as was Jimmy Cliff, who was planning to sing "The Harder They Come" at the ceremony, he told the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper.

Iggy Pop joked to Rolling Stone magazine that he was contemplating being asked to wear a most un-punk-like piece of clothing: a dinner jacket.

"I've got one. I can probably drag it out. I've got these things. I'm at the time of life where people sort of pick me up by the collar and exhibit me on various occasions."

The only official requirement for candidacy is having released an album or record at least 25 years ago.

"Beyond that, the committee evaluates the influence an artist has had on rock and roll, the longevity of the artist's career and the overall importance," the hall's official website says.

Record sales are not considered important.

"As a result, it's all very subjective. And all of the members of the nominating committee are very passionate about their suggestions," the website said.

Musicians already in the hall of fame include Eric Clapton, Madonna, the Beatles, The Byrds and Simon and Garfunkel.
