WITH KRIS Aquino and Ruffa Gutierrez out of its TV picture, the popular weekend show biz talk-variety show ?The Buzz? was overdue for a major re-infusion of hosts. Lone survivor Boy Abunda all by his lonesome? That would never do. So, KC Concepcion was first brought in and given her own section. Then, some three weeks ago, Charlene Gonzales and Toni Gonzaga also joined the program on a regular basis.
Boy, Charlene, KC, Toni plus some segment hosts?how does that new stellar combination grab you? Is it buzz or bust?
Clearly, in terms of star value, it hits the spot. KC hosts her own weekday talk show, so she gains in experience and visibility on a daily basis. With her show biz ?genes? (mom Sharon, dad Gabby, etc.), she has good prospects in terms of her career?s upward ascendancy.
Even more experienced in the biz is Charlene Gonzales. Despite her having become less active in recent years, she?s still a plus point for the show in viewers? eyes, due to her unique combination of positive factors like having been a beauty queen, a TV dance show host and Aga Muhlach?s wife.
In addition, as her first appearance on ?The Buzz? indicated, she appears to be determined to make her TV comeback a success. For her to do this, however, she has to make a quick adjustment to the unique requirements of show biz talk show hosting.
And, what are those? First, a genuine interest in the week-to-week developments in the biz, both professional and personal, with a decided preference for the latter.
Next, the ability to further add to the ?sizzle? of these stories, by way of their probing (some would say, nosey) questions during interviews. And, third, the penchant for pumping up the ?kilig factor? of the stories, particularly those of the lushly romantic type.
Will Charlene be up to all this? Some stars don?t have the patience or intrusive yen to get all worked up over other celebrities? scandals, but hosts of shows like ?The Buzz? have to do their darnedest to get excited about what ultimately is just?well, predictable fluff.
Toni Gonzaga is used to getting all fired up over show biz fluff, what with her experience on other biz-oriented talk shows. But her problem is her excessive slickness as a host.
She?s mastered the dynamics and technicalities of the job, but she lacks her own unique personality. This was sort of acceptable on her last program, where she shared hosting chores with other equally ?interchangeable? young hosts, but ?The Buzz? is a different ball game.
Boy, Charlene and KC come across as unique personalities whose ?projection? appears to be driven by their own ?motor,? while Toni has been used to sharing the screen with her young look-, sound- and perform-alikes, so she?s got the most catching-up to do. Let?s hope she?s up to that key challenge.
