A BEMEDALLED athlete, a bassist of a pioneering rock band, a French-Filipino model and a member of a popular all-female dance group are among the 18 personalities competing in the third season of the reality show, ?Survivor Philippines,? on GMA-7.
The castaways, marooned on an isolated island for 39 days, will be slugging it out for the coveted title, ?First Pinoy Celebrity Sole Survivor,? and a P3-million cash prize.
?Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown,? hosted by Richard Gutierrez, will premiere on the Kapuso network on Aug. 30.
Elma Muros, a former member of the Philippine women?s track-and-field team, said she is aware that competing in ?Survivor? requires ?different skills.?
?Viewers will see that I?m good, not just in running, but in a lot of things, as well,? Elma said. ?I?m still in top shape, even though I?ve long retired. I know how tough ?Survivor? is going to be, that I will need a lot of patience and discipline. Pakikisama is also important?if you?re not good at it, pag-iinitan ka.?
Buhawi ?Buwi? Meneses, 34, bassist of the bands Parokya ni Edgar and Franco, said he has made some ?spiritual? preparations.
?I concentrated on getting more strength from religion and my closeness to God. I also said goodbye to my loved ones. I even called some of them abroad,? shared Buwi, a dad to two boys. He added that he also met his bandmates to ?make necessary arrangements, so as not to inconvenience them.?
Model and make-up artist, Solenn Huessaff, said that compared to other reality shows, ?Survivor Philippines? is ?more of a mental game rather than physical.?
?This is why I organized everything in my head. I have strategies, although I know that I?ll still discover a lot of things about the people I?ll be with on the island,? explained the French-Filipino looker. She?s also a fashion designer and a painter.
SexBomb dancer, Aira Bermudez, 26, said she joined the show not for money or for popularity: ?I just want to experience it?although I want to buy my own house and car and put up a business. I?m glad to just be a part of this.?
Aira has been a member the SexBomb Girls since 2000. She is a regular of the afternoon soap series, ?Daisy Siete,? on GMA-7. She also hosted the now-defunct dance show, ?Let?s Get Aww!? on QTV 11.
In case ?Bubble Gang? mainstay, Myka Flores, wins, she plans to donate a portion of her prize to building an adoration chapel in her hometown in Santa Maria, Bulacan.
?I also plan to give something to young cancer patients at the Philippine General Hospital. I was there a year ago, and I saw how bravely the young patients fought cancer,? she recalled.
?Ka-Blog? host, Mico Aytona, 22, has a similar plan in case he bags the cash prize. ?I hope to donate to the church where I was baptized in my hometown, Paombong, Bulacan,? he shared. ?I?m also building a house for my family in Tandang Sora in Quezon City. With the prize money, I hope to finish it. And, I plan to help my dad (Felix) pay for my siblings? tuition.?
?We?re all here to win,? enthused Mico. ?We?ve prepared for this. It?s a game of strength and wit. I just hope that when this ends, magkakaibigan pa rin kami.?
Actress and new mom, Aubrey Miles, said she prepared for a whole month. She hit the gym twice a week and took some swimming lessons. ?I also made sure somebody would take care of my 3-year-old (Hunter Cody).
?The mom of Troy (Montero, Hunter?s dad) went home from Seattle to be with him,? she disclosed. ?I also made sure that all the bills were paid. I entrusted everything to Troy. Then, I called my family to tell them I?d be away for a while.?
Aubrey, who teamed up with real-life best friend, model Jacquiline Yu, in ?The Amazing Race Asia 1,? said she is ?expecting the unexpected? in ?Survivor.? She explained: ?It?s tougher to compete with 17 other contestants while trapped on an island. At least, in ?Amazing Race,? you get to sleep in a hotel room. When you wake up in the morning, you feel refreshed. With this show, you don?t know what to expect.?
The half-British model-actor, Jon Hall, said he has long dreamed of being part of a show like ?Survivor.? He shared: ?I find living on an island with no food and electricity exciting. In order to survive, we will have to catch our food. I don?t mind getting cuts and bruises. You only get one chance to experience something like this.
?Being strong isn?t enough to make you last long on the island. This is also a mental game. Having a strategy is important!?
Athlete and ramp model, Ervic Vijandre, is well aware that, after his stint in ?Survivor,? more people will be curious about his personal life, especially about what happened between him and ex-girlfriend, Marian Rivera.
?We broke up a long time ago. There?s nothing much to talk about. Having said that, I?m ready to face reporters if I need to. I?m willing to answer questions as truthfully as I can,? he added.
Ervic, a De La Salle University graduate, said: ?Being part of the entertainment business isn?t so different from being in the sports and lifestyle industries. ?Survivor? is a new experience for me!?
Princess Snell, the youngest at 18, admitted that she joined ?Survivor? for the prize money. ?Ayokong magpaka-plastic. I really want to get the P3 million. But, I know it will be hard. I made no physical preparations. It doesn?t help that I had just come from another reality show? ?Starstruck.??
Princess, who?s half-British, confessed: ?I want to be able to show people the real me. They?re used to seeing me all dolled-up and girly. In real life, I?m really one of the boys. I have more guy friends than girls.?
Also competing are veterinarian and ?Born to be Wild? host, Ferdinand ?Doc Ferdz? Recio; actresses, Michelle Madrigal and Karen delos Reyes; actors, Ahron Villena and Ian Batherson, stand-up comic, Pretty Trizia; comedienne, Moi Marcampo and Japanese-Brazilian model Akihiro Sato.
