TANGO ARGENTINA is poised to conquer Manila?and the rest of Asia?as it has the US, Europe and Latin America. I met some enthusiasts led by Chita Carandang Wilcox, who?s staging a series of workshops at Bodypoint Studio in Makati Cinema Square, Makati, conducted by young Chilean instructor, Enzo Hoces, who?s based in Argentina.
?Tango has always been associated with our music, so listening to tango music isn?t new to us,? shares Chita, who shuttles between Paris?where she discovered Tango Argentina?and Buenos Aires, where the dance form was born.
Significant role
The movies, of course, have played a significant role in introducing Tango Argentina to the world. ?Scent of a Woman? (1992) had a blind Al Pacino dancing with a beautiful woman. And ?Moulin Rouge? is remembered most for a romantic scene where a poet sings to a cabaret star while dancers perform the tango around them.
It is difficult to explain Tango Argentina?s appeal, admits Chita, who has found other tangeras here to bond with, like Ann Gatmaytan and Baby Doble. ?I have invited my teacher, Enzo Hoces, to visit the Philippines, and we will also teach streetchildren, those with disability and the elderly to dance.? After all, it has been shown that dancing has curative effects.
