LOS ANGELES ? There?s another Filipino-American actor in the ?Camp Rock? TV movies aside from Anna Maria Perez de Tagle. His name is Roshon Fegan.
While interviewing Roshon on the red carpet in the recent New York premiere of ?Camp Rock 2? (?CR2?), he proudly revealed to us that he?s half-Filipino. The 19-year-old?s mother is a Filipina whose first name is Cion. Roshon?s father is Roy Fegan, an American actor who starred in Robert Townsend?s ?Five Heartbeats.? Roy?s other credits include guest appearances on such TV shows as ?The Shield,? ?Will & Grace? and ?Mad About You.?
Roshon?s nickname used to be ?3inaRo? because he?s a triple threat ? he sings, acts and dances. He plays the drums as well and has other talents, but to call himself ?10inaRow? is ?not cool,? he says. At 2 years old, the LA-raised Roshon was already banging on pots and pans. His mother, instead of telling Roshon to put back the pots and pans in the cupboard, brought out more for him to drum on.
Roshon, who kept a pair of drumsticks in his pocket for years, charmed the journalists at the ?CR2? premiere as he broke into dance moves on the red carpet.
In ?CR2,? which premieres on the Disney Channel on September 5, 7:30 p.m., Roshon plays a breakdancer named Sander. Excerpts from our interview:
How did you land the role of Sander?
I performed for the Disney Channel people. A couple of weeks later, they came up with a role for me to audition for.
What?s it like filming with the Jonas Brothers?
They are very chill and laid-back guys. [But] they know how to have fun.
Do you get to talk with Anna Maria Perez de Tagle about your shared Filipino heritage?
I do talk to Anna a lot. She is like a sister to me.
Can you also talk about working with her?
It was really amazing working with Anna. She?s such a talented actress.
And working with Demi Lovato?
Demi is always so pumped with energy that she makes every moment exciting. It was really great working with her.
Do you think this is really ?the final jam? for ?Camp Rock??
I?m not sure. I?m hoping not. I would love to keep the ?Camp Rock? name alive.
Tell us about your passion for playing drums.
I love playing drums because to me, percussion is the backbone of all music and tempo. It was something that just came naturally and then I was encouraged by my mom and family.
How did you land in show biz?
My dad has always inspired me to pursue a career in the entertainment business. I?ve always wanted to do it because my dad did it. He is a huge influence in my life. Totally the only reason I do what I do today.
You had a cameo in ?Spider-Man 2? when you were only 12 years old. What do you remember most about that?
It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, being able to work on such a huge movie production. The whole thing was unbelievable. Tobey Maguire was very nice.
What are you looking forward to when you go to the Philippines for the first time?
I?m looking forward to finally meeting all my Filipino fans. I hope to do a concert to bring all of them out.
Tell us about your old nickname, 3inaRo.
It came from me being a triple threat entertainer. It is now the name of my entertainment company: 3inaRo Entertainment. My nickname is now simply, Ya Boy Ro.
Tell us about the first album you are making.
It will be a fusion of pop, hip hop and R&B/funk. It?s produced and written by me. The album will be out this coming fall. I can?t wait for everyone to hear it.
What role do you play in your new Disney Channel series, ?Shake It Up!?
I play Ty Blue in the new series, also coming this fall. I am the older brother of all of the ?crew? which includes one of the leads, Rocky Blue. I?m really excited to be a part of it.
