MONIQUE Wilson on doing ?My Name Is Rachel Corrie,? about a 23-year-old US peace activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer on March 16, 2003, while protecting the home of a Palestinian family from demolition:
The play is about a young girl who put her convictions to action. How many people today can say they not only believe in something, but actually do something about it? This gives me hope ? courage. I don?t have to be American or Palestinian to relate to her on all levels?her bravery, her fears, her honesty, her humor, her principles and her passion.
Some groups produce shows to make money. You need an incredible amount of nerve and courage to produce something that will provoke thought and debate. When you are the producer or the actress, you render yourself vulnerable to criticism or attack. But theater shouldn?t be comfortable or feel safe. It should shake us into waking up. Our job as artists is to serve the truth, to give it justice. (Call 8965497.)
