MANILA, Philippines?A beautiful door is likened to a beautiful mouth. That is, when a door is well placed, it can attract and bring into the home much happiness and prosperity to its dwellers.
So says, Judy Adler, the first American designated as feng shui master by Master Joseph Yu, founder of the Ontario-based Feng Shui Research Center.
In particular, Adler says the position of the main door is crucial since it is used more than any other door in the house.
She explains that ?the architectural main door is the one through which visitors enter and is considered the ?chi? mouth of the home. A well-placed main door encourages good health, wealth and longevity.?
To attract more positive energy, Adler gives us a few tips on how to make the most out of our main doors:
1 Main door size should be in proper scale to the rest of the house. If it is too large it can cause financial difficulties. If it is too small it can cause petty arguments.
2 Door frames should be straight and sturdy since these are considered the supporting poles of the family. These could help grow family fortunes. The door should be constructed of good material and be pleasing to the eye.
3 Place lamps outside the front door. Adler says this is similar to placing guardians in your yard. But these lamps should not block the door. Poorly placed posts (or trees) can cause financial loss and illness.
4 Main door should not face the corner of another house, a tree or a post as it can encourage sickness and financial difficulties. Adler reminds us that the area in front of the door (called ?ming tang?) should be open and not too close to another building, wall, hill, or mountain. Otherwise, poorly placed doors can promote arguments about petty matters.
5 Avoid having main doors open onto a path or road that has a ?Y? or a ?T? configuration. The Y can take away wealth as well as confuse the mind regarding which direction to go. Being at the end of a T-junction brings a rush of chi to your door, which can be generally difficult, especially for a residence.
6 Avoid having main doors face directly a church, temple, monastery or cemetery. This can make your home vulnerable to the ?yang? spirits that inhabit such places looking for ?yin? places to live.
7 Avoid having main doors face a narrow space between two buildings. The chi moves through the narrow space very fast and can cause many problems, particularly with health.
Adler notes however that even if your door is not in the best place, it can still attract more harmony for as long as it is beautiful?more than an ugly door.
Also, it is best to keep the area around the door clean and adorned with beautiful objects and flowers.
