Makeover 911 New skincare revelations By Kinny Salas Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 23:36:00 01/24/2008
MANILA, Philippines—Opening the Christmas goodies sent me was pretty late. But I had fun road-testing them. What was great was that the fabulous finds are mostly reasonably priced.
My favorite surprise was the new formula Olay Total Effects. Frankly, I did not really find the first generation particularly impressive as I found its texture too rich for my acne-prone skin. It also took care of only two signs of skin aging for me.
But the new version is really a much-improved version of the first. There really was a marked difference on my skin in terms of firmness, pore size, hydration and texture.
The new formula left my face feeling hydrated but not at all greasy.
I love the fact that I get to save time in using the new version without compromising the other benefits of such a skincare treatment.
With the new Olay formula, it won’t take seven days for women under 40 to spot a positive difference on most aging-skin concerns. But for others though, especially those older, the results may take longer.
Shampoo treatment
It may be January, but there are days I wake up drenched in sweat. This makes me sluggish and slow during the rest of the day. Trying to quit coffee just makes it even tougher.
My savior has turned out to be Head and Shoulders Menthol Shampoo.
I use the shampoo not only to lather my head. I also put a tiny bit of it on my palm for my face and ear areas. I also squirt some on a bath puff and apply it over my body.
Not only does the tingle wake me, but it sloughs off the dead skin on my scalp and my body skin. Great, too, for shaving legs and underarms.
The Zinc is anti-fungal and works on the zits on my back, shoulders, ears, face and chest. It is great for my underarms and other parts that tend to sweat and smell.
My next wish: Dandruff shampoo for very oily hair so mine would not grease up after 15 hours. Intense solution works on dandruff, but it hardly holds back grease.
Hair removal
I had a successful laser hair removal on my underarms and bikini area, but my legs unfortunately were rejected for the procedure as the hair strands there were too light-colored and thin.
The hairs on both edges of my upper lip have also been stubbornly growing back.
Waxing is too painful so Veet sensitive skin depilatory (P85 for 25g) is perfect for the upper lip. The great part is that there is no pain but the hair grows back very slowly.
For the leg area, it won’t hurt as much to wax as the leg is not as sensitive. But those who have low pain tolerance and do not mind waiting a few minutes should try the cold wax strips for legs (P199 at 100g for each leg).
There are variants for dry and normal skin as well.
Lipstick and lead
My favorite makeup is lipstick. Since there is all this revelation about some lipstick brands having high lead content, I am abstaining from lipstick reviewing.
My tip: If you have gold jewelry that is solidly built like a brooch or ring, use it to test if your lipstick has high lead content.
Smear the lipstick on the back of your hand, then rub it on the gold jewelry. If the jewelry turns black or grey, it means the lipstick has high lead content.
There is some finding that children who have learning disability have very high lead content in their blood, hair and nails. For now, I am sticking to gloss or tinted lip balm.
My favorite nude lip balm? Blistex Liptone (P70), which is your natural lipstick but with a better shade.
A reasonably priced lip balm that works for chapped lips long-term is Nivea Lip Care Essential Night.
Apply to lips before sleeping and you wake up with soft plump pillow lips. You can use it any time of day. The results last. Eventually the condition of your lips improves and the necessity to apply it becomes less.
