DINING ROOM. Ground the dining area in natural textures by using rattan, wicker and wood furniture and bamboo frames. There is beauty in imperfection, as in the long narra dining table, the focal point of dining area. The flaws are also in other woods to create mosaic design. Instead of cutting the wood into a perfect rectangle, designer Joel Ajero followed the wood’s natural grain. The chairs—molave and balayong—are made by Ting Gonzalez. To simulate the ethnic fabrics, dark geometric-patterned material was used as upholstery. The raffia lighting fixture is brightened with calamansi motifs. The second focal point is the metallic-acrylic abstraction by Lito Carating juxtaposed with the Oriental table accents such as the Buddha head, the ceramic plate by Pettyjohn and the ivory tusks with ethnic patterns atop the hardwood cabinet.

How to create modern Filipino home

MANILA, Philippines - Interior designer Manuel Castro pulled together a vacation home of businesswoman Sylvia Bascon in Tagaytay Midlands that is contemporary Filipino yet universal in appeal. He brings in elements of nature inside the home such as tropical wood and rattan furniture.

The palette echoes the Tagaytay scenery with walls in neutral background, sofas and chairs slip-covered in sand-colored material. Natural textures keep the muted color palette lively.

The interior décor is characterized by the display of whole grain of wood, shells as objets d?art, white accents and textured rugs that warm up the narra flooring. The symmetrically arranged accessories give order to a room which combines textures and wood tones.

Castro says all it takes is a sense of adventure to discover accessories, pottery and furniture that are made in the Philippines.
