MANILA, Philippines—A coconut diet can lead to a trim body! Cherie Calborn has written the book, “The Coconut Diet,” to explain the benefits we can get from the wonderful coconut.
She states: “Coconut oil is one of the reasons why Asians and people from the tropics—whose traditional diet includes coconut oil—are typically not overweight and don’t usually suffer from diseases that plague Westerners. The key to weight loss and vibrant health is in eating the right kind of fats (like those contained in coconut oil), avoiding refined carbohydrates, and consuming whole foods.”
Calborn reveals an intriguing fact: “The secret to weight loss is in the chain of molecules that makes up the fat of the coconut oil. Its fatty acids are known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which burn up quickly in the body. They’re a lot like adding kindling to a fire, rather than a big, damp log!”

Even better, one of the MCTs found in coconut oil is lauric acid, which has healing effects. Calborn explains: “When lauric acid is consumed—either in human breast milk or coconut oil—it forms monolaurin, a monoglyceride that has been shown to help destroy lipid-coated viruses, including HIV, herpes simplex, influenza, and cytomegalovirus, as well as a variety of bacteria.
