Inside Out

MANILA, Philippines—You will not slim down if you don’t change your eating habits. Eat the right food until it becomes a way of life. If you can’t, no diet will ever work.

Exercise. If you move your body, you will burn fat. Any kind of exercise is better than none.

Bulk up. The more fiber, the less fat in your body. Also, increase water consumption. Too much fiber can interfere with vitamin mineral absorption and cause bloating/nausea/gas. Take only 20-35 g a day. Natural sources: all bran cereal (23 g-1 c), avocado (1 medium size = 12 g), beans (½ c = 8 g), whole wheat spaghetti (1 c = 5.4 g), yams (camote—1 c = 5 g), squash (1 c = 9 g), apples (1 large = 6 g).

Cut down on carb. Studies have shown that the Atkins diet may be right (PDI, July 18, 2008) plus a Mediterranean-style regimen to lose weight—1,500 calories for women, 1,800 calories for men daily. A diet rich in vegetables, low in butter/cream, red meat, high in poultry and fish plus olive oil and nuts. Restrictions on processed carbohydrates such as white bread/pasta, cakes, pastries. This study published in the New England Journal of Medicine was led by Iris Shai, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The good news is improved cholesterol levels were the result.

High and low blood pressure can be managed by:

A sensible diet can have a significant effect on lowering blood pressure.

Decrease sodium and increase potassium intake.

Decrease sugar intake.

Eliminate caffeine.

Eat more garlic and onion.

Stop smoking.

Avoid stressful people/situations. Even loud people and noise can elevate your blood pressure.

Brisk walk to bring down blood pressure.

Watch funny movies; be in the company of happy people.

Stop listening to other people’s problems, you have enough of your own.

If you are taking hypertensive pills, you may need extra potassium. Check with your doctor. Remember, every medication has a side effect. Suggested supplements: calcium— 1,100 mg/day; magnesium—500 mg/day; Coenzyme Q10 with vitamin E—2-3 times daily; multivitamin/mineral supplement—once daily.

Natural supplements like kelp (3 tablespoons a day) can help hypotensives (individual with low blood pressure). If you have a thyroid condition, kelp may help you. While low blood pressure is better than high blood pressure, this condition can cause dizziness, blackouts and fainting spells.

Detoxify

Radiant skin is best achieved by detoxifying the body. Detoxify the liver by taking one glass of fresh beetroot juice thrice a week. The supplement glutathione 30mg if taken daily will also cleanse your system. Warning: Make sure that the manufacturer of glutathione is reliable and BFAD-certified. Remember that glutathione combined with Vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid can lighten the skin while cleansing the liver.

Also try out Detox regimen at Bio Safe Complementary Medicine Center. Call Dr. Irene Lim at tel. no. 4119168.

Brain booster

Brain power (by avoiding brain spikes due to blood sugar levels) is best achieved by eating more acidic foods such as natural (not synthetic) vinegar. Adding only four tsp of vinegar to a meal depresses blood sugar by 30 percent. And, good news for diabetes and potato lovers. Mixing one tsp of vinegar with potatoes lowers glycemic index. Include lemon juice, orange and grape juice, apple cider, red wine vinegar and natural vinegar to your meals. Yoghurt may also help control blood sugar but not as dramatic as vinegar.

Acid wash

Keep leftover vinegar for your facial astringent and body wash. Mix three drops of vinegar plus three tbsp of water. Use it to remove excess oil and dirt on your face. Add five tbsp of apple cider vinegar to your bath. This will cleanse your skin as it has antibacterial properties.

Affirm: “Happiness flows to me and through me.”
