MANILA, Philippines - Paul Potts, winner of “Britain’s Got Talent” TV search, will be heard for the first time in Manila on Oct. 8 at the Philippine Convention Center.
After rendering Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma,” Potts became an instant worldwide sensation, with the video of his audition receiving close to 30 million hits on YouTube. He eventually won the competition.
Born just outside Bristol on Oct. 13, 1970, to bus driver Roland and wife Yvonne, a supermarket cashier, Potts, one of four children, was singing almost from the moment he could talk.
By the time he reached 11, he was part of one of the best church choirs in Bristol, but it was when he hit 16 that his love of opera took hold.
“I bought a cheap recording of [José] Carreras,” he recalls. “It was the first time I had heard Che Gelida Manina [Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen] and I was so moved by it. To this day, ‘La Boheme’ remains my favorite opera.”
On July 16, 2007, Potts launched his debut album, “One Chance.” It had sold 2-million copies by year-end.
Potts’ Oct. 8 repertoire includes the hits from his “One Chance” CD such as “Nessun Dorma,” “You Raise Me up” (Por Ti Sere), “Time to Say Goodbye” (Con Te Partiro), “Amapola” and “My Way” (A Mi Manera), among others.
