Graceful portrait of Hanoi

By Anne Jambora
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - The rustic charm of Hanoi, Vietnam, is depicted in images of graceful wit in “Good Morning Vietnam,” a photo exhibit-workshop by photography group Travel Light, on Sept. 8 to 13, at SM The Block, Quezon City.

Walk through the vestal grooves of Vietnam and witness the sheer beauty of simplicity, as captured by the skillful eyes of some of the country’s respected photojournalists. Poignant and innocent, the photo exhibit-workshop paints a dignified portrait of the human spirit frozen in the pixelized world of digital photographs.

“Good Morning Vietnam” is also an excellent venue for enthusiasts and amateurs to learn tips from the pros. Workshops include “Basic Photography in Digital SLR and Lomography”; “Digital Photojournalism: A Real-World Approach to Visual Storytelling with Contemporary Technology”; “Travel Photography”; “Dynamic Duo of Wedding Photography.” A special subtopic on “How to Enhance Photos Through the Magic of Makeup Artistry” will also be tackled.

Nelwin Uy will speak on “Basic Photography in Digital SLR and Lomography,” is a workshop designed for hobbyists. Topics include basic photography background, maximizing the use of compact (point-and-shoot) cameras, understanding white balance, proper handling and storage of gear, the art of composition and design elements of a photograph.

The workshop on Sept. 9, at 1 to 6 p.m., also includes an actual photo shoot and friendly, constructive photo evaluation.

On Sept. 10, at 3 to 6 p.m., learn from two of the the country’s top photojournalists, Edwin Tuyay and Chito Vecina, about “Digital Photojournalism: A Real-World Approach to Visual Storytelling with Contemporary Technology.”

The two-day workshop requires participants to participate in photo assignments, nurture their photography instincts and develop a digital workflow in shooting, editing and layout. It offers an ideal experience in visual storytelling as enrollees get to participate in one-on-one edit and critique sessions. Limited enrollment ensures access to instructors and personal coaching.

“Travel Photography” will be discussed on Sept. 11, at 4 to 6 p.m., by Andy Samaniego. Learn the visual tricks of shooting architectural structures and landscape photography. Workshop also includes lessons in composition, specific to travel photography, lighting and making use of available light while on the road.

Wedding photography

On Sept. 12, at 3 to 6 p.m., wedding photography will be tackled by brothers Jun and Robert Garcia. “Dynamic Duo of Wedding Photography” imposes the importance of teamwork during the big day. To be discussed are the skills needed to make it as a wedding photographer, how to conduct and complete a wedding shoot the way pros do it, organizing and developing strategies in shooting weddings, creative control and perceptive vision, how to use portable flash with ambient light, postproduction work and Photoshop techniques.

A special subtopic on how to enhance photos through the magic of makeup artistry will be discussed by makeup artist Madge Lejano.

Travel Light is composed of photojournalists and wedding photographers such as PDI’s Chito Vecina; Asiaweek Magazine’s Edwin Tuyay; wedding documentarist and art director Nelwin Uy; the photography partnership of brothers Jun and Robert Garcia; travel, wedding and portraiture specialist Andy Samaniego; wedding videographer Mervin Gobaco; makeup artist Madge Lejano and this reporter.

Vecina, a multiawarded photojournalist, started out as a sports photographer before expanding his craft into the exciting world of fashion, lifestyle, home and wedding photography; he also works as a correspondent for PDI.

Multiawarded freelance lensman Tuyay has had his pictures featured in distinguished publications around the world, including The New York Times, Forbes magazine, L.A. Times, Reader’s Digest International and FHM.

Freelance art director Uy, one of the most sought-after wedding photographers today, averages 100 weddings a year, with bookings here and abroad. The Garcia brothers, meanwhile, with their eye for detail, have worked under the country’s top veteran wedding lensmen, and have reaped photography awards along the way.

Samaniego, with his attention to composition, detail and expression, is a rising star among wedding photographers. He is a member of the Society of Portrait Photographers of the Philippines. Videographer Gobaco finished a computer course in New York, and now combines his expansive knowledge in computer editing with his artistic sensibilities in wedding videography.

Multitalented makeup artist and once-upon-a-time painter Lejano is an award-winning photography hobbyist.

Don’t miss out the unique collaboration of talents in “Good Morning Vietnam.” Sponsored by SM Malls, Kodak, Angels Delight, Qualiplus International, MG video and Fabphoto. For details, call or text Chito Vecina at 09285027032.
