Extreme spa treatments around the world

MANILA, Philippines—There’s now such a thing as extreme spa, like extreme sports. Not for the faint-hearted, these treatments have become novelties and are gaining a following.

Are you daring enough to try any of these?

Japan

Ramen noodles are more than just a staple in Japan. The Yunessan Spa in Hakone offers a bath where you soak in a tub filled with ramen noodles.

This treatment is said to boost the overall metabolism and improve the skin. The pork broth used in the spa treatment contains collagen, which is said to improve the skin.

Or, why not try a 24-karat gold facial treatment? Developed by Umo, a Japanese beauty company, the treatment is said to have potent revitalizing and rejuvenating effects. Gold is one of the softest metals and is easily absorbed by the skin, accelerating cell renewal and reversing oxidation damages. By the way, the 24-K gold treatment costs $250.

New York

The world of “medical spa” has spawned a “gyno spa” devoted to making women physically fit inside and out. Developed by pelvic reconstruction surgeon Dr. Lauri Romanzi, Phit offers a signature treatment called Kegel Phitness that comes with a $150 price tag.

This treatment will have clients contract their pelvic muscles around the doctor’s finger to determine the muscle tone—weak, moderate or strong.

A “personal training” is given after the initial assessment and if all else fails, a vaginal tightening is recommended. They claim to be dedicated to pelvic health, in the belief that we should also be mindful of our vagina’s muscle tone. (Some advocacy)

The clinic offers pelvic services for women who have recently given birth, women with bladder control issues, and those devoted to fitness on all levels.

The Web site claims that the “Other” Face Lift, geared toward older women worried about wrinkling or sagging in that area, can “restore labial and vulvar contour to a plump firmness” with a process involving lasers.

As if keeping your thighs or arms toned isn’t tough enough, now women must be toned in that area too.

Geisha facial

Another oddity is the Geisha Facial at Shizuka New York Spa. This consists of a full facial that includes sterilized nightingale droppings. That’s right, sterile bird poop!

According to the Web site this “traditional and natural Japanese ingredient” makes the skin vibrant and soft. It all sounds so purifying until you realize that the treatment includes nightingale excrement.

The treatment, “uguisu no fun,” incorporates powdered and sanitized nightingale feces into a facial mixture. Nightingale droppings contain natural enzymes that act as exfoliants and skin brighteners, so what looks unsightly on the ground actually makes your face look great.

California

In the Big Sur in sunny California, imagine a sublime stretch of shore studded with redwoods, beaches, and waterfalls… hot springs with sulfur scent that hints of richness, exquisitely designed cobblestone and concrete tubs. All these you can enjoy in naked glory.

Esalen is more an institute than a classic spa. People from all over come here to soak in the famed Esalen baths, sans any clothing. Weekend tantric sex workshops for couples are even offered, but it is still possible to arrange day spa services with your equally naked therapist.

London

Some people just can’t stand their dry, frizzy hair so that they could go as far as smearing bull semen.

Hari’s Salon in London offers the infamous Aberdeen Organic Bull Sperm Treatment. It is believed that the protein in this ingredient moisturizes, brightens, and repairs your hair like nothing else. It’s combined with Katera root, another protein powerhouse that does amazing things for the hair.

It’s touted as the “Viagra for hair” so people are not so fast in dismissing this treatment. And at least you can say it’s organic!
