Enabling cells to produce energy

KREBS cycle refers to a series of chemical reactions happening within all living cells that utilize oxygen as part of their respiration process.

The process enables cells to produce energy it needs in order to survive.

This complex process of producing energy in the cellular level was first recognized by German-born British biochemist, Sir Hans Adolph Krebs, resulting in his conferment (together with Fritz Lipmann) of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1953.

Recently, this has been the focus of one Filipino doctor who believes Krebs cycle should be enhanced.

?It is no big secret how cells act as a generator of energy and thus play a very important role in the overall well-being of the living organism they make up,? explained Dr. Edmundo Lalusis, medical director and CEO of Growrich Manufacturing Inc., who developed a food supplement that aims to aid Krebs cycle.

Smooth operation

?Most supplement formulations in the market today only provide vitamins and minerals but don?t directly benefit the Krebs cycle,? Lalusis explained.

He added that excess amount of vitamins and minerals is not good.

?The human body can withstand only so much of one type of vitamin or mineral. For example, too much vitamin A or D is not good as both could get stored in the body?s fat and liver and eventually cause adverse outcome such as dry and itchy skin, fatigue and worse, cirrhosis of the liver,? Lalusis explained.

Others when taken in excess (like vitamin C) are not a cause for concern since their excess are passed through the kidneys and flushed out of the body.

Waste of money

?But come to think of it, taking something that your body will only excrete afterward is a waste of money,? Lalusis said.

In formulating Krebb-C food supplement, Lalusis was helped by his wife, Purisima who happens to be one of the country?s leading chemists.

?The amount and the type of vitamins and minerals chosen for this product are specifically designed to enhance Krebs cycle and thus, will ensure that every cell in your body will continue to run in tip-top shape,? she said.

The couple also boasts that their product is proudly Philippine-made, having developed and manufactured their product (in capsule and syrup form) at their laboratory in Caloocan City.

?Having Krebb-C product approved by the Bureau of Food and Drugs and made available in all Mercury Drug Store is a perfect example of Filipino ingenuity,? said the couple whose other achievement is to market the first encapsulated form of the virgin coconut oil food supplement.
