MANILA, Philippines - Loretta Calderon was inducted president of Quota International of Cebu in solemn rites at Casino Español de Cebu. She has been with the club since 1977 when Lydia Ibañez founded the Cebu chapter.

For many years, Loretta has served in various capacities. After being vice president for some time, she finally accepted the presidency.

“It is just a title,” she said in her speech, “We are all here to serve, and I will do my best, which I also expect of all the officers and members. ”

A Quota International installation of officers is unique. Roses of different colors are presented according to the positions and duties charged to each officer and director.

The two formidable vice presidents are Dulce Gantuangco, for internal affairs, and former Cebu City councilor Joy Pesquera, for external affairs.

Joy is the chair of the Quota District convention which will take place in Cebu end of April 2009.

Other officers inducted were secretaries Evelyn Ramirez and Clemencia Gatpolintan, treasurers Gasperlita Julia and Linda Rana, auditor Elsa Barrameda, and PRO Lisa Estenzo Torres who figured as Reina Emperatriz in the Quota Santacruzan 2007.

The directors are Louella Abellana, Marinisa Arimasa, Fely Gimarino, Sue Gray, past president Cristina Corominas and immediate past president Maria Lusia Veloso. She has been asked to chair Santacruzan 2009.

The date has already been set for the Quota Santacruzan: May 2. Plans are to ask Jinky Pacquiao to be the Reina Elena. She’s pretty, and yes, she is the wife of the Manny Pacquiao.

The Santacruzan serves to raise funds for the various charity endeavors of Quota-Cebu. These projects have to do with hearing-impaired children from poor families, and day care centers in economically depressed areas.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama, who was present on this occasion, has always been very supportive. He was also present and pledging support at the next induction of do-gooders, also held at the Casino Español de Cebu.

Zonta Club

It certainly was a memorable evening for officers, members and guests of the Zonta Club of Cebu II. After an intensive term of two years, Betty Young was turning over the presidency to Elsa Basubas, for the next two years.

In her acceptance speech, Elsa said that she realized she was needed from the moment she joined the group. She is a doctor of medicine and intends to use her knowledge. All these past years, she has not practiced as she has helped in the family business.

Zonta Cebu II even has a president-elect, Jane Young Llaban, whose term will be from 2010-2012.

“President designate, and in training,” said vice president Petite Garcia who was the evening’s emcee. Well, if you really want to know what the printed program said, Petite was called “Lady of Ceremonies.”

Other officers who took their oaths of office were secretaries Marietta Malinao, Deborah Limchiu and Myrna Ngo Chua; treasurers Cita Chan and Cynthia Dagus; and directors Odette Jereza, Filna Espina, Lydia Sia, Nancy Velez, Elena Young, Liza Young and past prexy Betty Young.

New members accepted into the fold were Fe Cuenca, Annie Neri and Emily Ong. Inducted into the nominating board were Beth Reyes, Chinggay Utzurrum and Florencia Miel. It is their task to seek out new members with qualities of potential leaders.

Marilou Rodriguez Cañizares was cited for her dedication and abnegation in helping the club with its most important project— the Pink Room for abused women and children at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. Some cases, if not most of them, can be heart-wrenching.

Zonta VIPs present on this occasion were Bangkok-based district governor Narudee Keingrisi, lieutenant governor Georgitta Puyat and area director Sandra Gomez, who reminded all about the meaning of Zonta. It is a Sioux word that stands for “trustworthy.”

Dinner and program over, the Zontains asked tables to be cleared, chairs arranged, and dance music to be played. They tripped the light fantastic with such energy that the visitors were quite impressed.
