WITH another member of the Association of Former Flight Attendants of Philippine Airlines, Tita Trillo, we recently attended the 77th birthday party of Capt. Ricardo Singson, who was connected with Philippine Airlines prior to his retirement. The wine queen and I used to fly with the captain as flight attendants.

Close friends and classmates in the Philippine Air Force celebrated Capt. Singson?s special day with him, together with his four daughters?noted OB-Gyne specialist, Becky Singson; dentist Ronna Ledesma; Kerygma magazine editor, Rissa Kawpeng, and graphic artist, Kelly Jugo?who threw the party for their dad.

Sumptuous lunch

Every birthday is reason to celebrate. The celebration of one?s 77th birthday is called ?kiju? by the Japanese. The two characters mean ?joy? and ?long life.? The milestone is considered a joyous year in Japanese culture because getting to that age is thought to be fortunate. Well, Capt. Dick is that?and more.

After the guests had eaten the sumptuous lunch, Dr. Becky happily announced that the latest CT scans of her dad, who has been undergoing chemotherapy, revealed that the nodules in his lungs have almost disappeared. She said she and her sisters got him a gift she knew he?d enjoy?an LCD TV!

She then asked us to look at the sky for another surprise for her father (who was a member of the Air Force?s first aerobatic team, the Blue Diamonds): She had asked someone to do a fly-by! So, we all went outside to watch the air show.

Then, while we were looking up, a brand-new silver Honda Civic with a large red ribbon made its way into the garage. Another gift! The teary-eyed father, who has survived tongue and skin cancer, felt he had just won the jackpot!
