ON March 24, Internet celebrity and veteran blogger Heather Armstrong will release her book “It Sucked And Then I Cried: How I Had A Baby, A Breakdown And A Much Needed Margarita.”
The memoir, which she wrote about her pregnancy, the birth of her first child Leta and the postpartum depression that followed, will soon be on people’s bookshelves.
But before that, she wrote everything online. She kept track of her pregnancy—from her mood swings and her cravings—and posted photos of her growing belly on her popular website www.dooce.com.
Thousands of readers followed her blog every day. And although Heather wrote about other things, her posts on parenthood have always received attention. Since her daughter’s birth, Heather has been writing beautiful letters to her daughter monthly. On Month 58, she wrote: “I love your curiosity and concern, your anticipation, how you repeatedly assure me that when the baby gets here you will totally share your nachos with her. And I refer to the baby as ‘her’ because you will not even consider the alternative, and there are times when I bring up the possibility and you will hold up your hand to silence me, as if I’m talking about something as appalling as genocide.”
Pregnant again, Heather continues to document her life as an expectant mom online, once again posting photos of her growing belly and writing things like: “There have been so many nights in the last couple of weeks when I have believed that I would feel sick like this forever. Jon has tried to comfort me, but the thought of anyone touching me or getting close enough to breathe on me is enough to turn me into a homicidal maniac, and I assure him that he shouldn’t take it personally. If Brad Pitt were to reach over and caress my face I’d whip around and bite off his arm at the elbow. Note to partners who are feeling neglected: PREGNANCY IS BLIND TO CUTE AND SEXY.”
Heather’s readers are hooked not just because she writes very well but because she always managed to be funny and real— even when she’s writing about the pain of childbirth.
Countless women (moms, especially) have found a kindred soul in Heather.
