WHEN IT COMES to summer hairstyles, the old rotation of ponytails, beach waves, and braids just won?t do. This season?s clothes need to be accompanied by fresh coifs. Take your pick from Spring-Summer 2009?s hottest runway shows.
Soft tendrils: Bottega Veneta
A hairstyle inspired by Diane Keaton?s character in the ?70s Woody Allen film ?Love and Death? puts tendrils on the list of this season?s hair trends. Orlando Pita, the hairstylist who created the look for Bottega Veneta, twisted the models? hair into a low bun, fastened it with an oval leather clip and kept it in place with a silver rod. The front layers, which were initially left out, were then curled with an iron and kept in place with hair spray. The center and tendrils give this look a romantic twist as it softly frames the face.
Side chignon: 3.1 Phillip Lim
An easy, modern take on the chignon is wearing it on one side of your head, like an accessory. Lead hairstylist for 3.1 Phillip Lim, Odile Gilbert created this look which he described as ?very intricate, elegant and sophisticated.? Gilbert drew inspiration from the ?40s and gave it a more modern shape.
Marni hairstylist Orlando Pita also took on the off-center chignon trend. But this time, he started with a deep side part and roll-pinned the hair to the side of the head for a softer, more subdued look.
Hair accessories: Dolce & Gabbana
Statement head pieces work just as well as your favorite necklace or accessory, as seen in the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show. Domenico Dolce carefully pinned gorgeous silk floral patterns, satin ribbons and vintage-looking gems onto his models? heads, which in turn complemented the outfits they wore on the runway. Worn more like a hat than a headband, this trend will surely add oomph to any summer outfit.
