MANILA, Philippines ? There are many interesting stories you can pick up at badminton courts. One topic that gets my radar running is when people talk about new but inexpensive dining places.
During a pre-game huddle, I heard a new acquaintance talk about a restaurant in Barrio Kapitolyo, Pasig, which serves delicious Black Angus burgers. It was interesting to note its location?beside a car wash that belonged to the restaurant?s owner.
For a good number of my great gastronomic finds, ambiance is key. My sister, Nina, took me to a place in Lipa City beside a jeepney depot that served freshly cooked bibingka. Joseph and Jaemarks, now located in Magallanes, used to serve its popular inihaw na panga at its place beside Cuneta Astrodome, where commuter jeeps abound. Ambiance adds to the total dining experience.
Reasonable prices
So, one afternoon, I drove to Pasig to check out Charlie?s Burgers and Grill, a small café-type restaurant with only a few tables. Menu is written on a board, and prices are reasonable. I ordered the Angus burger and the Philly cheese steak sandwich. When everything is prepared from scratch, it could take some time to fill an order.
The burger was nice and juicy, but sounded better than it tasted. But, I loved the Philly cheese steak, which reminded me of a cheese-steak joint in the early ?80s along Reposo, whose cheese steak was comfort food for me. The French bread was warm and crusty, the thin slices of beef were tender, and the sauce was creamy. Delicious!
Popular
The place is always full and is becoming more popular. I went there around three in the afternoon and saw many customers hanging out for the variety of beers the place offers. Their chicken wings and fish and chips also look interesting. They?re perfect after an evening game of badminton.
Check out Charlie?s Burgers and Grill at 16 East Drive, Barrio Kapitolyo, Pasig City. Call 635-4857.
Happy eating!
