BACKSTAGE PASS
The best shampoo, conditioner for your hair

A GOOD shampoo cleans hair by removing excess oil, dirt, and styling product buildup from the scalp and hair strands. It should also add moisture to hair strands, boost natural volume, and provide manageability and shine.

The problem is choosing the best shampoo and conditioner for one's hair.

If you have normal hair, choose a mild detergent formula that only removes unwanted debris yet leaves hair's natural sebum (oil) in place. By protecting hair's natural moisturizing system you can ensure healthy locks and prevent unwanted hair damage.

Get a shampoo with labels that contain the words moisturizing or hydrating, and those specially designed for scalp health.

If you have oily hair, select a shampoo brand with deep-cleansing properties to remove the buildup of oils from scalp which can cause hair to be limp and lackluster. The shampoo should not be excessively harsh since stripping the scalp completely of oils can result in producing more oil. Shampoos for oily hair are usually clear in color as they have less fat-like, creamy substances.

If you have dyed, bleached or highlighted hair, a color-safe shampoo and conditioner help prevent color from changing or fading due to exposure to light or heat. These should be used every day.

Advice from experts

If that wasn't enough, I interviewed three individuals whose active lifestyles constantly expose their hair to excessive styling and harsh environmental conditions.

"For everyday use I use Head & Shoulders, the one with cool menthol as it's a great treat for my scalp. I usually flake because of stress so I use this kind of shampoo. If the flakes get worse I use Nizoral shampoo once in a while to get rid of flaking and itching together with a little concoction my dermatologist told me to use."
-Vic Barba, fashion designer-equestrian

"With my work as a model, host and actress, hair damage is a common problem, especially with the hair products with bad chemicals that ruin my hair. So I see to it that I use Dove Shampoo to have damage control which makes it smooth, silky and presentable but also gives me shining confidence."

"I change my shampoo every so often. I find that switching things prevents buildup, and it improves the overall health of my scalp. The one shampoo I do have a love affair with is VMV's Essence Skin-Saving Superwash Hair and Body Milk Shampoo. It's light, not heavily scented, and it gives me that clean feel without weighing my hair down. Oh, and when I'm in a rush, it doubles up as a soap, too! Excellent stuff."

Tips
To straighten wavy hair, use Oleo-Relax Slim Cream from Kerastase. It's a cream that is easy to apply and immediately melts into the hair. It enhances frizz control and greatly reduces the volume of rebellious hair. It's an instant quick fix to wavy hair.
