Sports vibe rules fashion

FRIDAY night lights, cheerleaders with a mission, love sets at the tennis courts ? a sporty vibe has taken over the runway.

Here are three takes on three designers getting playful this Spring in their versions of American sportswear ? Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Lacoste. With these looks to look forward to, it?s hard not to become a fan.

Schooled by Wang

Alexander Wang taking fashion into the football field?

Then again, it does make sense that he?s still donning the patriotic red, blue and white colors of the American flag. Coming from a successful stint at the Gap, he is still very much about all-American sportswear.

For his Spring 2010 ready-to-wear show, he infused a classic style into the varsity look. Think less ?Glee? cheerleader, but more of the rugged and sexy female jock.

His latest collection has been described as ?varsity pinup,? as if ?a bevy of cool high-school girls had raided the locker room with a pair of scissors.?

What made the cut ? ribbed athletic socks with cutout backs, a deflated football bag and zippered sandal boots. They certainly make those staple gray gym attires statement outfits!

Also scoring high marks in my book are the shirt-looking tied skirt in military green and football shoulders.

What kept his collection on the feminine side? His sexy locker-room shorts paired with his version of a sports bra.

Something more to cheer for ? Wang?s hot leopard peep-toed booties ? very popular in the cool and sexy department.

Jason Wu scores

Jason Wu loves a one-shoulder dress ? and it seems he has a First Lady as a big fan. None other than Michelle Obama wore a one-shoulder gown of his to the Inaugural ball last year. It was a touchdown for the 26-year-old designer.

For Spring, Wu?s formula was to take casual, everyday pieces of American sportswear and recreate them in luxe fabrics.

The cross-breeding turned out interesting key pieces like a denim silk romper and hooded sweatsuit in navy tweed.

His favorite one-shoulder dress came to the knees and in all sorts of fabrics, from gold faille to ribbed silks.

Wu turned playful with colors, mixing the pink feathers with lime green, violet and candy apple red on a bustier. How?s that for pumping up the adrenaline?

Lacoste goes to court

Spring fever for Lacoste means a love set on the court. This is artistic director Christophe Lemaire?s version of the French Open: simple, sporty and chic.

Models walked down the white planked boardwalk in varying ensembles of the classic tennis outfit: micropleated miniskirts, airy mesh sneakers, matched up with cable-knit sweater dresses. And of course, the classic Bjorn Borg white headband.

Other than the tennis inspirations, there was also a hint of beachy-ness to the ensembles. It was as if you were transported to a resort town in France with sunshine and blue skies with the ocean-colored carpet. And of course, the clothes.

There were interesting resort interpretations of the classic tennis uniforms: aqua headbands with a side twist, one-shoulder tennis dresses and wing-sleeved hoodies. Definitely an ace.
