MANILA, Philippines - About 877,000: Average number of people who die by suicide every year (WHO, 2008)

One per 40 seconds: Estimated global mortality rate from suicide in 2000, when approximately one million people committed suicide.

Around 20: Estimated number of suicide attempts for every committed suicide

At least 100,000: Estimated number of adolescents who commit suicide every year

Almost 100: Estimated number of Japanese nationals who killed themselves every day in 2007

52: Percentage of suicides committed with firearms in the United States in 2005

37.8: Percentage of women who committed suicide by using poison, the most common suicide method for women (US, 2005).

About 250: Estimated number of physicians who commit suicide in the US yearly

584: Total number of deaths from suicides reported by the Department of Health among teens aged 15 to 19 between 2001 and 2003 in RP

1978: Year of the Jonestown mass suicides in Guyana, South America, which left over 900 people dead, over 200 of whom were children. Most of the dead were members of the People's Temple Christian Church, and had consumed a soft drink laced with cyanide and sedatives

P484 million: Estimated expense on mental health in 2007, about 5 percent of the Department of Health's National Healthcare Expenditure

95% of P484 million: Estimated amount spent by the DOH solely on the operations of mental health facilities
