WITH Leinil Francis Yu serving as the vanguard, the Filipino invasion of mainstream comic books is now in full force. Here are some other comic book talents of Filipino descent who bear watching:
Whilce Portacio: The Image Comics co-founder and Wetworks creator has reclaimed the spotlight as the artist for Todd McFarlane’s reinvigorated “Spawn” series.
Philip Tan: The “Final Crisis: Revelations” artist makes his cosmic leap for stardom when he commands the art corps for the iconic title “Green Lantern” amid DC Comics’ Green Lantern-centric crossover Blackest Night.
Carlo Pagulayan: Fresh from a smashing tour of duty on “The Incredible Hulk,” Pagulayan brings detailed pencils to the quirky Marvel team book “Agents of Atlas.”
Harvey Tolibao: He served as penciller on the “War of Kings: Darkhawk” mini-series for Marvel.
Bong Dazo: Tolibao’s co-penciller on “Darkhawk,” Dazo illustrated “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” for Dark Horse and Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.”
Jay Anacleto: The “Aria” penciller lent his ultra-realistic touch to the “Marvels: Eye of the Camera” limited series.
Eric Canete: A veteran of animated series like “Aeon Flux” and “Justice League,” Canete is best known for Marvel’s “Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin” and is the artist on Dark Horse’s “The End League.”
Jay David Ramos: A colorist as well, he helped ink “Darkhawk.”
Kajo Baldisimo: After cutting his teeth on the moody local title “Trese,” Baldisimo recently made his international debut as penciller for the Dark Horse title “Who Wants to be a Super-Hero: The Defuser.”
Elbert Or: The “Bakemono High” creator provides the visuals for Filipino-Canadian J. Torres’ “Lola: A Ghost Story” from Oni Press.
Lan Medina: The inaugural artist on the Eisner Award-winning “Fables” series for Vertigo most recently drew the Marvel Max mini “Foolkiller.”
Mico Suayan: Goes from one part of the Marvel night to another, moving from “Moon Knight” to “Dead of Night featuring Werewolf by Night.”
Stephen Segovia: After working on “Wolverine: Manifest Destiny” and other titles, Segovia is also doing covers, most recently for Dynamite Entertainment’s “Battlestar Galactica: The Cylon War.” He illustrates the upcoming online exclusive “Wolverine: Hunger.”
Don Figueroa: This Filipino-Canadian is perhaps the most popular artist ever to work on the Transformers books.
Wilson Tortosa: After spreading his wings on “Battle of the Planets,” Tortosa brought his manga skills to the Marvel/Del Rey Manga book “Wolverine: Prodigal Son.”
Edgar Tadeo: Recently inked the Marvel mini “X-Men: Worlds Apart.”
Michael Jason Paz: Served as inker on Marvel’s “Skaar: Son Of Hulk.”
Alex Niño: The Pinoy comics legend is the talent behind Image’s zombie mini “Dead Ahead.”
