Their Choice

BREAKING away from its tradition of handpicking only solo athletes to wear their top of the line sports sunglasses, Oakley Philippines recently launched an unprecedented move by sponsoring the entire local triathlon team Polo Tri, numbering close to 60.

On this major shift in sponsorship style, Oakley President Ramesh Dargani said: "Oakley only affiliates itself with the best. Polo Tri is the best in and out of the sport, and we support them with the best products we can offer."

After road-testing the Jawbone, Flak Jacket and Radar, the latest 2010 Oakley shade collection, here's a look at a few Polo Tri members' scorecard:

"Lens clarity, for obvious reasons, and frame durability. And, aside from the great optics the lenses provide, they fit well - and as a bonus... look great!" ? Fred Uytengsu, President and CEO of Alaska Milk Corporation, 12 years triathlete and prior to triathlon, used to play golf, tennis, softball and scuba

"I look for fit and sharp optics. I don't want it to be sliding down my nose when I run or bike; it needs to really stay and be comfortable at the same time. The lens has to be very hard-working. It needs to be sharp so that the road's bumps can be discerned even in shadows, and it has to still be wearable even in hard rain." ? Larry Ocampo, financial services executive, 13 years, triathlon, golf and scuba

"It has to be lightweight and still cover my entire field of vision. It must feel like I'm not wearing anything so that the only time I'll realize I'm wearing one is when I walk into a dark room. The radars I own do not let any light in except through the lenses. It never slides down my face even when I'm biking down a bumpy road sweating buckets and with sunblock on. I love it!" ? Jom Jiao, physician, four years triathlon, scuba and ultimate frisbee

"Fit, UV protection, durability/strength, real technology. I need it to ensure my eyes are protected from the elements ? the sun and road dirt, dust, flying objects. I had my first Oakleys with me for more than eight years before I bought a new pair of Oakleys. They make a big difference when I'm running under the heat of the sun. They give such great shade!" ? Nona Torres, head of investor relations, Ayala Corporation, 14 years triathlon and tennis.
