MANILA, Philippines—Many great things will happen in 2008 so that it’s hard to keep track of them all. If you’re the sort though that would rather kill time in “Fully Booked,” kill Zerglings or watch a killer basketball game, this might be the list for you.
1. Check out the 2008 National Collegiate Championship games
Okay, so our dream of one conference for the NCAA and the UAAP is just a dream again. Hopefully, this tournament, which pits the Top 16 college teams from around the country as a replacement for the Champions League, will be able to fill the void somewhat.
What’s going to stop teams from dropping out of the running before the first round actually starts or sending in half-baked Team A-Team B hybrids (the major flaws of the Champions League)? Hopefully the incentive of representing the country in the 2009 University Games in Serbia will be enough to encourage the teams to go full-throttle.
2. Get an official iPhone
I’m sure you have early adaptor friends with hacked versions already, but legality’s a nice thing, don’t you agree? Also consider this: cell-phone companies will have to offer much lower prices because there are unlocked versions in the market already, and if you’re patient, you may get the rumored iPhone 2.0 which will connect faster to the Internet and which has more memory.
3. Watch ’90s TV shows
The shuffling of channels on SkyCable has resulted in some of the channels offering up old series from the ’90s in order to round out their programming hours. AXN Beyond has “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” ETC has “Ally McBeal,” Crime/Suspense has “The X-Files.” It’s a wonderful opportunity to relive your past, or find out what all the buzz was back then. Now if only someone could bring back “Dawson’s Creek”...
4. Follow “The Amazing Spider-man” thrice a month
It’s a “Brand New Day” for comics fans and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t join the ride. New villains! Expanded supporting cast! When are Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson going to get back? And check out these creative teams: Dan Slott and Steve McNiven, Bob Gale and Phil Jimenez, Marc Guggenheim and Salvador Larroca, and Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo!
5. Figure out what “Cloverfield” is all about
The best-kept secret in today’s Internet-driven era still is JJ Abram’s “Cloverfield” movie. How mysterious is it? “Cloverfield” might not actually be its name! All we know is that there is a monster, it will rampage through New York, and that it is not “Voltron” (because yes, people actually thought it was “Voltron”). It’s out in the United States on Jan. 18 and it cannot get here fast enough.
6. Prep your PC in hopes that “Starcraft 2” comes out this year
Okay, given “Blizzard’s” track record, betting that “Starcraft 2” will come out this year is a bit like betting on the Miami Heat to get to the NBA Finals this season, but hey, you never quite know. A December 2008 release could be in the books for this long-awaited sequel.
7. Stalk bookstores for “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman
It’s like “The Jungle Book” except instead of a jungle, there’s a graveyard. A kooky concept in the hands of most authors, but it’s Neil Gaiman we’re talking about here. Not only will it read good, it will look good as well with Dave Mckean onboard to illustrate this so-called children’s book. So-called because odds are more people above 13 will be snapping this one up.
8. Move to Boston
If you’re a sports fan, there’s no better place to be right now than Boston. Between the New England Patriots threatening to go 19-0, the Boston Celtics reigning it over the rest of the NBA, and the continued brilliance of the Red Sox, no other town can boast the possibility of having as many victory parades as Beantown.
9. Keep your fingers crossed in hopes that Coldplay’s new album, “Prospekt,” will be as brilliant as their other work
Enough said really. And if it so happens that it does turn out terrible, there’s a new U2 album set to be released in the latter half of the year that might give your eardrums a good symphonic massage.
10. Get published in “Philippine Genre Stories”
A personal project that you can adopt as your own.
