All grown up for the prom

MANILA, Philippines—When 15-year-old Jean Dominique Jaymalin wrote to Inquirer 2bU!, asking for a makeover for her high school prom, she didn't know what to expect.

"I just wanted to get help in changing my look for the prom," JD said. "I had no idea what I wanted."

For JD, a junior at the Quezon City Science High School, a makeover was the first step in breaking out of her shy shell. She had never worn makeup or a dressy gown before the makeover, so she was unsure of what look she wanted.

"I just didn't want to look old," she said. "But I wanted to stand out."

Inquirer 2bU! got Lanie Acedillo of Paul and Joe Beaute to do JD's makeup, and Nora Baua of Capelli Salon Café to fix her hair. For her knock-them-dead prom gown, JD picked out a red satin-and-chiffon gown from Karimadon, courtesy of owner Josie Go.

"My first consideration in doing JD's makeup was her age," said Lanie. "I didn't want the makeup to overwhelm her features. She still had to look like herself so she wouldn't be self-conscious the whole night, but at the same time, look more special for the prom."

Lanie started the makeover by patting on moisturizing foundation and loose powder to prime JD's complexion. She also plucked JD's eyebrows to get her ready for eyeshadow.

"It's important to groom eyebrows to add definition and shape to any face," Lanie advised.

Lanie then smudged a coal-gray shadow on JD's lids and coated her eyes with black liner on the upper and lower lashes. After curling JD's eyelashes, Lanie slicked on several coats of black mascara to open up her eyes. Soft pink blush and pale pink lipstick completed the look.

"Since she's wearing a red gown, I wanted the makeup to be fresh and light-not to steal the attention from the gown."

For JD's hairdo, Nora Baua alternated between hot rollers and a curling iron to create a soft, feminine look. She also teased the top portion of JD's hair to create volume.

The result? A softer, more feminine and slightly grown-up look.

"I got more than I expected from the makeover," JD said. "I had such a great time at the prom afterwards. My friends were surprised! The gown was gorgeous, the makeup was great. I never thought that I'd look the way that I did."

Visit Capelli Salon Cafe at 133 Mother Ignacia Street, Quezon City, tel. 4161728-3. Call Lanie Acedillo at 0917-8486850 or visit www.lanieacedillo.com. Karimadon is available at leading malls nationwide.
