MANILA, Philippines—There is always something about discovering serene and unspoiled beaches that leave you spellbound.
One such hideaway is Bagasbas Beach in Daet, Camarines Norte. It’s a perfect place for newbie surfers, with its soft sands and great waves atop a shallow beach. This destination, known only to a select few in surfing circles, is only an hour away from Manila by plane, or eight hours by bus.
The Department of Tourism, together with the provincial government of Camarines Norte, recently set up the first-ever Bagasbas Surf Camp, a whole weekend filled with favorite beach activities such as skim boarding, ultimate Frisbee, beach volleyball, rock climbing and, of course, surfing. Over 200 guests trooped to Bicol to join the camp—a mix of foreigners, locals and Manileños.
Camarines Norte provincial tourism officer Edgardo Reyes said, “The aim of the event was to teach surfing to those who would like to learn, and at the same time to let the people know there is such a beach in the Philippines that would allow them to feel the thrill of surfing in safe and friendly waters. We would also let people know that Camarines Norte is surrounded by beautiful beaches that are ideal for fun activities.”
Bagasbas Beach’s best waves come around October. The rental fee for a surfboard is only P200; instructor’s fees are P200 per hour.
