Ateneo fashion flair

MANILA, Philippines—When asked what defines their style, the girls in Ateneo de Manila University seem to agree on one thing: comfort above everything else. “My clothes should always be stylish but comfy,” says 18-year-old Victoria Reyes, a Communications Technology senior.

2bU hung out at the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) to see what some of the female students of Ateneo wear. While the students can’t always wear what they want to (as JGSOM has a dress code that prohibits revealing clothing), they manage to brighten up their clothes with a few key items such as funky accessories and bags.

While fashionistas around the world are pulling on mile-high stilettos and strappy sandals, the Atenistas keep it real: a good number of them wear flip-flops to school. Paired with jeans or skirts, Havaianas are still popular with the students. Other opt to wear graphic sneakers and ballet flats to school.

The Ateneo students like their brands, too; a good number of them shop at high-end or mid-range retail stores, such as Mango, Topshop, Zara, and Gap. Others prefer to do their shopping abroad in stores like H&M, while a lot of them source their clothes from local shops such as F&H, Kamiseta, and Bayo.

But don’t be mistaken; the students are not snooty about brands. Some of them get their fashion fix at ukay-ukays and local department stores (one student proudly said that she liked shopping at SM).

Apparently, Ateneo fashion differs from college to college, so this is just a small sampling of the fashion scene in the university. Watch out for more student fashion in 2bU.
