So you want to color your own hair?

Here are some tips

MANILA, Philippines—Searching for happy, crazy hair colors in the country is a little tough. Your best bet? Ebay. The auction website has a number of different brands available for bidding—Raw, Manic Panic, Special Effects and even Lolane, the secret brand I buy from Singapore. Other recommended brands include Punky Color and Jean’s Color.

Google, look at magazines and research before you dye. That’s when you’ll know exactly what kind of color you want. Try to get inspiration from other dyehards.

Yes, we all want to scrimp and save, but it might still be smarter to go to a salon for your first coloring job just to make sure your hair is bleached properly.

Put tape on your forehead to make sure you don’t stain it.

When coloring, wear a really old shirt, one that you won’t mind staining. Or do what I do—punch holes into a garbage bag and wear it over your clothes.

Use gloves or put ziploc bags over your hands to avoid staining them.

If bleaching sounds scary, you may skip it and still try to color your hair but because Asian hair is very dark, you may not achieve the colors you desire.

Hair coloring can be harsh on the hair. Keep your hair conditioned and go for regular hot oil treatments.

When your hair has been dyed, start using shampoo and conditioner for colored hair to make sure your hair color stays as vibrant as possible for a long time.
