School cool on rainy days

MANILA, Philippines—To put stock on fashion in the face of typhoons may seem trivial. But imagine this: You stumble into class, rain dripping off your hair, sneakers sloshing because your socks have absorbed every drop of flood water you’ve passed through, and at roll call you try valiantly to roll down the hem of your jeans. So naturally you miss your name being called, making all that running across buildings in vain.

Dressing well for the weather is very practical, will earn you brownie points from professors, and, most of all, is actually quite easy.

Rain buddies

It can all begin with a simple jacket made of water-resistant fabric. Sports jackets are now tailored well and are shrunk to fit the female form. And for those wary of the bulk or the sudden surge of heat, check out the Adidas Originals sleeveless hoodie or the Adi-fuse cropped track top.

Grown-up raincoats

One can also opt for the rainy-day staple from our pre-school days, the raincoat. Many brands now offer a wide variety of coats to choose from. The fabric is generally water-resistant and the silhouettes are very flattering.

On the top of our must-have list is the gray Gap jacket with bell sleeves and Mango’s rich purple coat.

The short of it

And since the tops are long, the bottoms can be shorts. Avoid lengths that will land you in detention, but invest in great-fitting shorts that fall just above or just below the knee. These will let you run around the campus comfortably even in a downpour. Unlike jeans, they don’t cling to your skin when wet and they dry faster.

Boot rainy blues away

Shorts look fabulous with colorful Wellingtons and flat-soled leather boots, these being the footwear of the season. Not only do they look like a dream, wellies and boots will keep your feet dry as desert. Try Plueysmanila.multiply.com for the cutest wellington designs, or Janilyn and Zara for leather boots.

Be the rainbow after the storm

Don’t let the storm get you down. Staying at home may seem such a good idea in this weather, but you can have only so many cuts, so it’s better to save them for, well, another rainy day.

Get the energy to fight the drab by surrounding yourself with all things colorful. Try brightly striped sweaters, plastic totes in summer prints, and sturdy umbrellas in different colors.
