I am beginning to like this girl, who is so not my type. She’s three years older, she’s not girly, she’s independent, and she’s a little too intelligent for me. But every time I talk to her I always find one more thing to like, and she makes me laugh too. She makes my ex-girlfriends look generic in comparison. But something is holding me back, and that is the fear that she doesn’t need me in her life.
What is wrong with me?

Dear ABI,
Nothing’s wrong with you, you’re just acting like a typical male raised by a society that has stroked the macho ego for centuries. Men feel they have to serve a purpose, to be of some use. That’s why they feel they have to be stronger, taller, smarter, and they have to be earning more than their women. When this need is not met, the universe implodes.
Tell you what, she sounds like a great girl, so go ahead and get to know her better. So she’s older than you – it never hurt anyone to have an older girlfriend. She’s independent, meaning she will never be the high-maintenance girlfriend we all love to hate. And since when did intelligence become a liability? Dude, she’s a catch. Making you laugh is just the cherry on top.
Stop being such an idiot and let her know how great she is, or one day you’ll see her making someone else laugh, someone who’s not threatened by a girl.
