Out of their uniforms

By Bianca Consunji
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Last updated 01:38:00 12/13/2008

SCHOOL uniforms can be constricting. However, students don?t need to wear flashy trends to express their personal style. Some simply add an accessory or two; others claim that all they need is an extra dose of confidence and spunk. Let these students show you how they style up.

Michelle Renato, 19
Tourism, La Consolacion College Manila

Describe your personal style: I dress according to my mood. My clothing style knows no limits.

What do you usually wear to school? The prescribed uniform of course, plus accessories to glam it up a bit.
How do you work your personal style around your school?s dress code? By wearing big and bold accessories that stand out.
What do you wear when you?re hanging out with friends? Usually something funky and street-glam. I also wear shoes that set me apart from everybody else.
Clothing items you can?t live without: Shoes, big totes, oversized shades, stylish rings and bracelets/bangles.

Christian D. Ty, 19
Broadcast Communication,
University of the East

Describe your personal style: Simple, but makes a statement
What do you usually wear to school? Uniform
How do you work your personal style around your school?s dress code? How I interact with my schoolmates
What do you wear when you?re hanging out with your friends? Casual clothes
Clothing items you can?t live without: Jackets and Ray Bans

Katrina Diploma, 16
Third year, Miriam College High School

Describe your personal style: My personal style is basically anything I feel pretty and comfortable in.
What do you usually wear to school? Our school uniform?a tan blouse, green skirt, white MC socks and plain black shoes.
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? It's hard given that we can't wear anything to school, not even accessories. So, that leaves me with confidence (and the hair). I also work my personal style through the bags that I use.
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? I wear different kinds of clothes: skinny jeans/shorts, an elegant top and flats. I also wear dresses (with leggings or tights if it's a mini dress). And for the past few days, i've been wearing my new high-cut shoes!
Clothing items you can't live without: Jacket. I always feel cold.

Krisshajene Viaje, 16
Fourth year high school,
Sacred Heart Academy of La Loma

Describe your personal style: I don't really know, because sometimes I feel like wearing girly attire, and sometimes I feel like wearing hip-hop clothes. It depends.
What do you usually wear to school? School uniform!
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? I wear simple accessories like pearl earrings and a magnetic bracelet. I sometimes wear an anklet though it's forbidden.
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? I wear colorful tops and skinny jeans.
Clothing items you can't live without: Jackets and skinny jeans

Anna Patricia O. del Prado, 14
Second year high school, School of the Holy Spirit, Quezon City

Describe your personal style: I like wearing laid-back clothes.
What do you usually wear to school? Uniforms and training clothes
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? Wearing simple yet stylish clothes and at the same time obeying the dress code and by not overaccessorizing.
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? I wear shorts, jeans, tank tops, baby tees.
Clothing items you can't live without: I can't live without shorts, tank tops, jeans and shirts.

Marco Miguel K. Lim, 16
Third year high school, La Salle Greenhills

Describe your personal style: My personal style? It's pretty unique, actually. It's influenced by names like the Cool Kids, Pharell, Cobrasnake and my teammate Bench Cruz. Basically urban street culture.
What do you usually wear to school: Uniform, what else! And a school pendant.
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? I just work it out and do my thing. Whatever I wear doesn't really matter because confidence is the key.
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? I whip out anything in my closet and just play around with it, because like I said, it's how you carry the clothes is what really matters.
Clothing items you can't live without: My LSGH baller ID (school pride baby!), nothing more, nothing less.

Paulo P.E. Achacoso, 17
Third year high school, Ateneo de Manila University

Describe your personal style: Laid-back (casual, not emo or preppy)
What do you usually wear to school? School uniform.
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? I don't get to work my personal style because we have a school uniform
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? Usually either jeans or shorts, a shirt and a bonnet.
Clothing items you can't live without: Cargo shorts and white bonnet.

Christian San Jose Adrales
BS Radiologic Technology, Emilio Aguinaldo College

Describe your personal style: I like to wear clothes that I'm comfortable with, I don't like flashy outfits.
What do you usually wear to school? Monday to Friday school uniform, Saturday's casual wear.
How do you work your personal style around your school's dress code? I can't because the school's tight with rules regarding uniform.
What do you wear when you're hanging out with your friends? Jeans, white shoes, and a polo shirt will do.
Clothing items you can't live without: My workout clothes, jersey, cross training shoes, towel, boxers, jeans, gimmick clothes and an extra shirt on my car.

These students joined the Skechers Streetdance contest.
