MANILA, Philippines ? Meet Martin de Joya, 19. He may seem the typical shy and quiet, boy-next-door, but this former varsity swimmer from Xavier School, is a force to reckon with in the pool. He?s sheepish about it though??I?d prefer to be thought of as the underdog.?
A naturally gifted athlete and the eldest in a brood of three, he?s focused and disciplined once he sets his mind on a goal. That?s how he performs well in swim meets. Off the pool, gym, basketball and Frisbee are things he likes doing.
He was part of the student council in high school, and even helped organize a ?Stand up to bullying? campaign.
Now, as an incoming freshman at Ateneo de Manila, he jokingly says the one thing he?s excited about college, ?is when the time comes my friends and I will get together to remember what high school was like.? He loves listening to alternative punk rock, and a little of acoustic music. His feisty eight-year-old brother, Matthew is his greatest inspiration, would you believe?
