Temperatures, tempers rise at UAAP

By Ruth L. Navarra

MANILA, Philippines ? The heat of last week?s explosive UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) weekend was only matched by the lousy ventilation of Philsports Arena in Pasig.

Last week?s games were a testimony to the old cliché: ?Bilog ang bola? (Literally, The ball is round). Any UAAP team could beat another team any time, any day.

David trips Goliath

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons defeated the heavily favored Ateneo Blue Eagles on last Sunday?s game. The Eagles lost with an embarrassing 10-point deficit.

The Eagles looked dazed after the game. Their fans looked stunned. But perhaps, it was the Maroon fans that got the biggest shock of all.

When the Maroons entered the last five minutes of the game with a big lead, Facebook status and Twitter messages started to flood with messages that ranged from disbelieving comments to crossing of fingers.

When they finally won, it was like winning the championship. I wouldn?t be surprised if champagne bottles were exchanged in Superpoke somewhere.

The Eagles can lose more games; they will most probably win them, too. Heck, they could even end up defending their crown successfully. But it will be very hard for them to live down the day the Maroons owned them in a game.

Hot place, hot heads

Technical difficulties on the part of ABS-CBN made home viewers miss most of the first half of the game between the La Salle Green Archers and the Adamson Falcons. When airing resumed, tempers were running high between La Salle?s Joshua Webb and Adamson players.

In the second game, we saw UP?s Alvin Padilla and Ateneo?s Jai Reyes exchange some words on the court. The words exchanged were probably not that nice because Padilla elbowed Reyes afterward resulting in a technical foul.

I would like to think that this is passion playing out before my eyes but I would rather blame the lack of proper air-conditioning in Ultra as the cause of these heated exchanges. Your disposition would be sour, too, if you?re expected to play your heart out in an oven.

Amazing half-court shot

The buzzer-beating half-court shot of Adamson?s Aldrin Margallo during the third quarter was so amazing that it deserves a standing ovation from their fans and a hundred tumbling passes from their cheering squad.

Adamson?s game against La Salle gave this season?s first overtime. La Salle won the game with just one point.

Cat got your tongue?

One of the most hilarious scenes that I have witnessed in UAAP, so far, was the game of the UST Growling Tigers against the UE Red Warriors.

UE?s Raffy Reyes swiped the ball clean from UST?s Jeric Fortuna?s hands. He was running for a quick lay-up when halfway to the ring, he looked back. But my friend swears he did more than look. He said he saw him stick his tongue out to the Tigers he left behind.

He completely missed that lay-up. Next time, he really should concentrate on making the shot first before baiting his opponents.

Consequently, the Tigers won for the first time against UE since 2006.
