New prospect, challenges for versatile tandem

MANILA, Philippines--What's up next for Angelina and her Yaya after the success of their first film? Standard show biz logic suggests that the hit tandem will go on to topbill other movies, but some insiders think that the tandem will have a relatively short lifespan.

Principle

They even believe that, after the conclusion of ?Hole in the Wall,? the game show Ogie Alcasid and Michael V (aka Angelina and Yaya) are currently hosting, the hit tandem will be phased out. Why the abrupt departure? It may have something to do with the principle: Quit while you?re ahead.

If that prediction does pan out, it?ll be an uncharacteristic show biz denouement. In the biz, the opposite often happens: Has-been stars have had to be forcibly pushed out of the scene long after overstaying their welcome.

But then, Ogie and Michael aren?t your usual kapit-tuko luminaries. They have a lot on their plate, so the relatively early departure of their Angelina and Yaya subpersonas won?t be that big a deal for them?unless there are enough fans out there who will insist on extending the hit tandem?s lifespan!

Meanwhile, Ogie has a new portion on GMA-7?s ?S.O.P? show titled ?Pianoman? that features the hit songs he?s composed. The feature underscores the fact that Ogie is one of the most versatile entertainers we have. Aside from interpreting other people?s songs, he writes his own hit tunes, not just for himself, but for other popular singers, as well.

Rogues? gallery

Michael V is similarly versatile, but in different ways. As his weekly TV show attests, he?s a master of impersonation, with a veritable rogues? gallery of crazy characters in his repertoire. And, in tandem with Ogie, Michael periodically comes up with some of the wittiest satirical and novelty songs we?ve heard.

What?s up next for Michael and Ogie, regardless of what happens to Yaya and Angelina? If we had our druthers, we?d want to see them move up a notch in the creative department and do the music and lyrics for a new stage musical. Now, that?s a particularly pleasant prospect!
