Cautionary tales
These bloggers learned the lesson the hard way

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Heather Armstrong
www.dooce.com

In 2002, Heather created history as the first blogger to ever get fired for her blog. Today, the term for getting fired for your website is “dooced,” named after Heather’s blog. She earned the ire of her bosses after links to her blog entries about work (“Reasons The Asian Database Administrator is So F- Annoying” and “The Proper Way To Hate a Job” are just some of them) were shown to them. She fell into depression for a while but Heather thinks her unemployment is the best thing that has happened to her. She blogs for a living now. She and her husband make enough from their websites to support their dogs and daughter. Heather raked in awards at the 2008 Bloggies, winning the Best American Blog, Best-Designed Weblog, Weblog of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wendy Cheng
xiaxue.blogspot.com

Wendy is a celebrity blogger in Singapore who has found herself in the middle of controversy because of her blog a number of times. She has gotten endorsement deals from different companies because of her blog’s huge readership, but her fearless entries and sometimes reckless posting has been lambasted in newspaper articles and people have put up hate sites devoted to her. Her blog was also hacked and defaced in 2005, although some believe that she just fabricated the story. She appears on TV and print in Singapore and continues to blog, although less frequently.

Izzy
sarongpartygirl.blogspot.com (now closed)

In 2005, Izzy (known to Singapore’s blog community as SarongPartyGirl) posted nude photos of herself online. She changed her mind and took them down minutes later, but it was already too late. Other bloggers had lifted the photos and posted them on their blogs. The photos created major Internet buzz and even led to articles in Singapore newspapers. Izzy has closed her Blogspot address and started using her own domain name, but that website has now been shuttered, too.
