The next big thin

MANILA, Philippines—Remember the days when mobile phones were as huge as soap bars and ice shavers? It didn’t take long before we got sick of the huge size and heavy weight, making us want anything smaller, thinner and lighter. Mobile-phone manufacturers answered our prayers and created new mobile phones accordingly—smaller, thinner and lighter models.
Eventually though, mobile phones started to get bigger again, thanks to the demand for features such as bigger LCD screens, touch-screen capabilities and digital cameras.

You’d think that huge is the way to go. However, there will always be a market for smaller, thinner, lighter mobile phones.

One such model is the Sony Ericsson W350i. The first thing that will attract anyone to the Sony Ericsson W350i is how slim and sexy it looks like. At 10-mm thin, it fits perfectly in your bag, and even in your pocket—minus the bulge, of course. But with its sleek and stylish look, this new Sony Ericsson phone is something that you certainly don’t want hidden.

At first glance, it looks like any candy bar phone, but what makes this mobile phone special is how it incorporates the flip phone factor. The flip—which covers the keypad and the navigation keys—can be opened to answer a call and then closed to end one.

And you know how addicting flip phones are. There is just something so cool, sophisticated and classy about closing that flip. Think Lauren “LC” Conrad during the first few episodes of “The Hills.”

When closed, the flip also controls all the key Walkman features of the phone—play, pause and scroll.

Music functions

Since the model is part of the brand’s Walkman phone series, expect a lot of cool music features such as matching earphones and the ability to display album art.

Aside from the excellent crisp sound quality present in every Sony Ericsson mobile phone, this iPod-looking model also boasts of MusicDJ, a sound recorder, an FM radio and the Track ID, a helpful music function that lets you record a song snippet, sends it to a global music database online and then comes back with the song’s title, artist and album.

These music features assure you that whatever music you listen to—Katy Perry, Santogold or even Heidi Montag (yes, that girl from The Hills can sing!)—you’ll have an awesome audio experience.

With its small size, the W350i is the perfect phone to accompany you commuting to work, eating lunch alone or killing time. And because it is flaunt-worthy with its trendily thin look, you definitely won’t mind leaving it (okay, displaying it) on top of the table or your office desk, whether you’re using it as a music player or not.

Those who are into color choices would be delighted to know that the W350i comes not only in the classic Electric Black color with orange accents, but also in other color combos such as Hypnotic Black with purple accents and Ice Blue & Graphic White.

Of course, the W350i has other necessary basics: games (QuadraPop, Extreme Air Snowboarding and the addicting Guitar Rock Tour), a 1.3MP digital camera and a memory card slot.

Don’t be fooled by this phone’s size. It may be small and thin, but it’s packed with basically everything that you need from a mobile phone and more. There’s so much to love about the Sony Ericsson W350i: It looks good and it sounds good—especially when you close the flip. Nothing beats that interestingly sophisticated sound.
