MANILA, Philippines? For Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi, art must be accessible; regardless of the medium used, art should be appreciated by everyone who sees it.
?As a visual artist, I try not to box my work to mean one thing,? he said. ?I like it when people see my work and interpret it personally to see different things in different ways, depending on their history or background. I leave my art open for viewers to interpret themselves.?
Saksi describes his propensity for color and detail as ?a mixture of art from different decades.? Largely influenced by?60s psychedelia, he prefers working with wild colors and styles.
Saksi, who has worked with popular fashion brands (including Issey Miyake, Levi?s and Diesel), recently collaborated with flip-flop brand Havaianas for a series of fashion-inspired installations and murals shown around the world.
His most notable work with Havaianas, a color-drenched installation in the Time Warner Building in New York City, paid tribute to the artistic collision of metropolitan style and creativity.
The installation was a set of four different pieces, with some directly painted on the buildings. ?It was pretty impressive and a really interesting project. One of the best projects that I?ve ever done, actually,? he shared.
?I think Havaianas is the perfect example of the whole concept of art and function,? Saksi said. ?The brand exemplifies the ideals of mixing artwork and functionality in an object.?
Saksi?s New York installation inspired the graffiti wall that now covers the Paseo Underpass, offering color and vibrancy to commuters. Aside from this, giant flip-flops covered with flowers, plants, and other paraphernalia were displayed in the Havaianas Outdoor Slipper Sculptures at Bonifacio High Street.
The collaboration with Havaianas is a feast for the senses that offers an innovative way for everyone to experience the brand of flip-flops.
Havaianas is available in All Flip-Flops, Celio, Gas, J & S Surfshop, Moana, Nail Spa, Rustan?s, ROX, Sepatu, Stoked, Souk, The Zone, Orange Juice and Kidsports. Visit www.havaianasphilippines.com
