Ermita in Manila got its name from the word ?hermita,? Spanish for ?hermitage,? after the one built in the area by secular priest Juan Fernandez de Leon as homage to Nuestra Señora de Guia. The priest arrived in Manila from Mexico in 1591.

In 1595, Augustinian priest Francisco Ortega petitioned the founding of Ermita or La Hermita.
