Cinemanila turns 10

MANILA, Philippines—It’s all about the arts for the coming week! From international movies to the classics revived and ballet, get a huge dose of the culture and the arts with these three events this week.

Dekada Manila, the 10th edition of Cinemanila International Film Festival, opens on Oct. 16 and runs until the 19th at the Gateway Cineplex 10, Araneta Center, Cubao City. It opens with the caper movie, “Sparrow,” by maverick director, Johnny To.

With the aim of bringing internationally acclaimed movies to the locals and Filipino movies to the world, Cinemanila is truly the local cinemaphile’s dream film festival. Try to watch as much of the 38 films in competition as you can! For more information and schedules, log on to www.cinemanila.org.ph.

Youth symphony in ‘Laro!’

Next Friday at the Rockwell Tent, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Center in Makati, the Philippine Youth Symphonic Band (PYSB) performs at “Laro! Child’s Play.”

Together with guest musicians, PYSB breathes new life to the classic songs of our youth such as “Sitsiritsit/Leron-Leron Sinta,” “Tongtongtongtong Pakitong/Penpen De Sarapen.” We may even hear them do reggae, jazz, latin, pop, and rock!

A children and pet furniture auction at the event completes the experience. For tickets, call 891-9999.

Ballet season

Ballet Philippines continues its stunning performance season with “Mga Awit and Thresholds II,” beginning Oct. 17 to 19. Catch them at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. For tickets and information, call 551-0221/ 551-1003/832-6011.

Information is subject to change without prior notice. For more information on events, log on to www.mag24-7.com or pick up your free copy of 24/7 Nocturnal Navigator at your favorite malls, bars and restaurants.
