Not squemish about creepy-crawley things

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Last updated 21:02:00 11/21/2008

ANNA Belknap is pregnant and it is showing. Her due date is in February but it’s not stopping the actress from fulfilling her role as Lindsay Monroe in “CSI New York.”

This is the second time Anna Belknap has been pregnant while shooting “CSI New York.” And this time, the producers aren’t going to hide it.

“We’re all going to grow up a bit this season,” Anna said.

When Anna isn’t shooting new episodes for “CSI New York,” she lives a normal life in LA.

“I don’t get inundated by paparazzi, I’m too boring,” she said.

Is it difficult for an actress to be pregnant in Hollywood?

This is a very family-oriented crew, all my bosses have children. They never gave any indication that it wouldn’t be okay, but I was kind of nervous to tell them because you never know what their response is gonna be. But I always know they’re two separate things — career and family — and I always knew I wanted a family.

Is it hard for you physically now that you’re pregnant?

I’ve been very lucky. The first chunk is the worst where you’re very tired the whole time and both times for me, I was on hiatus. So far this year, it’s been fine and as you start getting bigger and bigger and bigger, it’s definitely more tiring and your brain doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to anymore when you’re pregnant, so I have to spend more time learning my lines. I don’t know why that is. The first time I was pregnant when they were hiding it, I would get a little vain about how huge I was and they weren’t telling everyone that I was pregnant. I had vanity issues. It’s hard to be on your feet all the time so the director would block me sitting down.

Can you compare the challenges of doing theater and television?

I love doing theater and one of the things that’s hard on television is that you don’t have the audience there, you don’t get that rush from the audience, all that energy and you don’t get that instant feedback. You don’t get two hours to go on your full journey. I like the challenge of being truthful on camera. I feel like onstage you can get away with a little bit more. I miss the audience, I would say.

Is it hard for you to deal with creepy-crawly creatures?

I’m pretty much a tomboy, I don’t really mind, but there have been a few things like when we had to deal with cockroaches. I really didn’t like that. Sometimes the live little worms get on you. I did have to deal with a snake once that I had to throw which was uncomfortable but generally I don’t mind the gross out stuff.

Do you really have a maggot wrangler, a cockroach wrangler on the set?

Oh yeah, everything we have that’s alive comes with someone who’s in charge of it. We had moths in one episode. It was kind of comical because I was supposed to get inundated with moths but when they let the moths go only like three came up to my face. We only had once chance to do it, so I think they added some graphics and stuff.

How has the show changed your life?

I don’t get ambushed by paparazzi. My life is totally pretty much normal. I don’t get recognized all that much especially here in LA where people are so used to seeing people. Sometimes in airports, people come up who are big fans of the show. When we had this storyline of Danny cheating on Lindsay, I had people coming up to say, “What he did to you was wrong!” and stuff like that.
Describe each of the “CSI” shows with one word.

“CSI” the first one is studious, “CSI Miami” is hot and ours, I would say, is much more complex to me, I can’t sum it up in one word. But I guess I would say edgy?
