Surprised heroes

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Last updated 07:24:00 10/03/2009

BANJO BAUTISTA was surprised when people started calling him and asking to be rescued. ?Some were also asking people to search for their loved ones who were left behind.?

Banjo and the other guys behind 8 Kamroad Cars and Jetskis ? David Apuad and Philip Crisostomo ? didn?t know how people got their number. ?At first we thought they were prank calls. Some said they found it on Facebook, others said they heard it on the radio.?

But just because they were surprised didn?t mean they weren?t ready for action. ?Seeing all these helpless people and knowing that we have the equipment, we can?t just stand there and do nothing.?

Because they had a rubber boat at their disposal, they went out and did what they could. They rescued people.

Their first rescue was the most memorable. ?We went to Countryside Subdivision because somebody called about a pregnant woman with a month-old baby.?

They went out and rescued the mom and her baby, determined to do things right. ?We heard many stories about people rescuing people who were friends of their superiors. We didn?t want to do that. We rescued people based on the degree of importance and emergency.?

Aside from rescuing people, Banjo and his friends also brought blankets that were donated by Camelot Hotel.

And every time their phone rings, they answer. ?Monday night we went back there and brought the boat again because people were still asking for help.?

The helping isn?t over for Banjo and his friends yet. ?We intend to do this for as long as there are people out there who need our help.?

They have also managed to collect relief goods and want to get involved in repacking them. ?We?ve experienced rescuing people, now we want to help distribute relief goods. We don?t want to just drop them off, we really want to go to the centers and help pack them.?

You can send more donations to 8 Kamroad Cars and Jet Skis, 8 Kamuning Road, Quezon City.
