MANILA, Philippines—If you’ve been hooked on “The Contender Asia” after only its first two shows, then you’re most probably a bit more curious about Muay Thai today than two weeks ago. And if you’re female, the sudden interest could belinked to the fact that the show is our answered prayer after all those years putting up with “Baywatch.” Yep, those Muay Thai fighters are muy hot.
I happened to bump into—okay, make that ambush— one of the fighters of the show, K.K. Zach from Singapore after the media conference. Zach, who has been training Muay Thai for nine years, shared that he hopes the show would help promote the sport on a global level. His passion is infectious. “You have to do what you love and think you should really pursue it.”
I asked him how it was like living in a house together with 15 other hot guys, I mean, fighters. He says, “I gained a lot of respect with those people in the house,” he said. “We all got really close, like brothers.”
Yes, there’s nothing like hitting and kicking each other in the name of brotherhood. “We spar a lot, we always train so we become used to pain. Not saying it doesn’t hurt but your body gets used to it. My dad can’t even watch my fights!”
Zach believes that people want to see the kind of persons they are. “The drama for me is the training, the fight, how we want to improve ourselves. Muay Thai is very meaningful. Respect and humility is part of the sport.”
