MANILA, Philippines ? By the time you read this, Craig David?s Manila concert will be over. He would have performed songs from his ?Greatest Hits? album at the Araneta Coliseum and fans would have danced and screamed until their throats were sore.
But if you missed his show, it?s not too late. You can spend time with him this afternoon at the Glorietta 5 Atrium where he will be signing autographs at 4 p.m.
Super was lucky to get some one-on-one time with the R&B singer-songwriter from England the day before the concert.
You?re gonna be here for a few days?
?Yes. I wish I can get out so I could see Manila. It would be a shame to come out to a place and not see the city. I?m very lucky to have a great Filipina housekeeper. She cooks some great food ?even traditional food. She was really excited because she was saying how her family and her friends are coming to the show.?
How hard was it to choose which songs to include in your ?Greatest Hits? album?
?We went through so many songs and I got to a point where I went, you know what, we can put B-sides or all these extras or try to come up with something clever but if it?s called ?Greatest Hits,? it?s got to have the greatest hits in it.?
Do you have a favorite song from this album?
??Fill Me In.? It?s a special song to me. It?s the first song that really got people into my music.?
What was it like hitting number one on the UK charts at 19?
?One, it was overwhelming. Two, I took it in stride. It was the start of a whole new life for me. I never thought I would travel to so many countries and that my music would touch so many people around the world.?
How has fame changed you?
?It has changed me for the better. It opened my eyes to things I had never seen before. I meet people I never would have met before. The only downside to fame is that you?re constantly in the idea of the media and it?s like you can?t let your guard down. You just gotta be careful. But you gotta live life at the same time.?
What else do you want to do?
?I wanna make another studio album. You never know what song is going to connect to someone, what song is gonna change someone?s world. You?re always one song away from having the biggest worldwide smash-hit song ever.?
How do you relax?
?I have some good people, good friends around me. It doesn?t matter where we go, we always have a lot of fun. I?m a big believer of that. The energy is what makes the party.?
If you weren?t doing this, what would you be doing now?
?I would have said my DJ-ing would have taken off and that I would have carried on going around the world playing other people?s music. Me singing and writing songs changed my entire life. I have no idea where else I would be. I wouldn?t be in the Philippines now that would be a far, far stretch.?
What was it like working with Sting?
?Sting was someone I grew up listening to. I found myself thinking, ?How am I in the studio with this guy?? Sting was in the vocal booth, I was behind the desk pushing the buttons and talking to him, ?No, it?s not like that, can you change it a little bit?? I was telling Sting how to sing the song ? it was quite bizarre. I?m not trying to undermine him in any way, he?s a living legend. But he was very cool and modest and down-to-earth.?
What can people expect from your live shows?
?I always find that people compliment me on the fact that it actually sounds better live than it does on the record. When you?re in a studio, you?re trying to sing perfectly and you?re thinking about things quite a lot. When you?re onstage, it?s an emotional connection with the crowd. I feel I give a better performance onstage.?
